disk brake conversion question
Ok, maybe i am not searching correctly but i cannot find a thread in the FAQ that details everything i need, so i am asking the experts. Can someone point me to a detailed thread or let me know what i need off my 72 parts truck. :waah:
I have a 67 that i am building for my son, i bought a 72 roller with disk brakes and 5-lug rear to do the conversion. I have heard soo many scenarios i would like to know exactly what i need to pull off the 72 and install on the 67. I know i will need the booster/master , brake lines/clips, spindles rotors calipers. center link, upper lower ball joints ( will buy new for install) all steering linkage. 67 has ps now. do i need the upper or lower control arms... any suggestions would be appreciated, i am still new to the 67-72's, but loving it thus far. Is it better to do a complete crossmember swap. I would have to rent a cherry picker..... Thanks in advance. |
Re: disk brake conversions
I believe the upper and lower arms are the same, but ball joints etc are different, If buying new stuff use the 67 arms (or the 72's if they are better) and buy the new parts for a 72 w/discs. I think the mounting tabs for the brake lines are welded to the crossmember, so cut them off and tack weld them to the 67 crossmember. On a scale of what is best vs easiest, swapping the 72 cradle (crossmember and all the related stuff) would be better, maybe even easier in the long run but kinda labor intensive! Jack up the 72 and cut the bolts that hold the crossmember off then roll it out and repeat on the 67, use new grade 8 bolts to put it under the 67 then rebuild as needed.

Do the crossmember swap...

Re: disk brake conversions
Ok, thanks for the suggestion , i should be ready to tackle this in a couple of weeks. Will the mounting holes all line up perfectly for the crossmember swap, or will new holes have to be drilled. I am trying to get all the info i can on this. Thanks in advance.

Re: disk brake conversions
All the holes will line up with no problem. You can probably make some kind of support to hold the engine in place while you do the swap.Taking the A-arm assys out and using your existing crossmember isn't that difficult either but it's just a little more awkward.:chevy:

Re: disk brake conversions
Almost all the holes will line up. All but one on each side anyway. If you check out my 67 panel build up it gives instructions on what I had to do to change the whole crossmember. http://www.classicheartbeat.com/67_panel_project.htm WES
