Mechanical Fuel Pump Question

New chevy truck owner (70 SWB 4x4 with a 454 motor) with a newbie question. I took my truck for a ride last night and this moring I walked into the garage and found puddle of fuel under fuel pump, upon further investigation found what looked like the fuel pump seaping fuel from the upper seam. My question is why would fuel be seaping from the fuel pump without the truck running? FYI After replacing the fuel pump the issues did go away. Is there any other things that could have caused this. Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Mechanical Fuel Pump Question

more than likely its just a seal gone bad and gravity just pulls things down our gas tanks are higher than the pump so its a bit of pressure on it even when its not running.

your problem is not unique i have seen this in a few threads. just one of those things i guess.

Re: Mechanical Fuel Pump Question

If the pump has a bad diaphragm, it will leak fuel out the "weep" hole in the pump body, rather than allowing fuel to leak into the crankcase.

That keeps the gasoline from diluting the engine oil and causing high $ damage.

Much better external than internal. Well said EL JAY.

You should check/change your oil too.

Re: Mechanical Fuel Pump Question

Might just be a leak at the fuel line fitting running onto the top of the pump, but for the $10-12 cost of a new pump, swap it and be sure. As said above pull the dipstick and make sure the oil does not smell like fuel.
