Locking gas cap for 72
Anyone know where I can get a locking gas cap for my 72 c20? The ones I have found on the net go up to 71. What's the difference? Some emission BS, I'm sure. Sorry if this is in the wrong forum. Thanks in advance. AC

Re: Locking gas cap for 72
Good question. I've been meaning to do the same to my 72. Apparently some have the extra emissions related stuff and some don't. I need to stop by the local NAPA and see what they have.

This is for the 67-70 non-locking cap. For a 72 it might be vented, and then the parts store should be able to cross the non-locking to a locking and vented if needed. If the cap is not vented, drill a tiny hole in the cap, but the system may be vented (if it has a charcoal canister in the front under the batt or on the other side a non-vented cap is what you need). I hope that isn't too confusing, but GM did three different things here, non-vented cap, vented cap and vented fuel system. Figure out what you have and use the link above or hit up your local NAPA, Car Quest etc. |

and it's going to the truck board instead of the engine board.

Mine was in stock at Advanced Auto. I never drive a vehicle without one - too paranoid!

Re: Locking gas cap for 72
After I retired from the Navy this Jan., I moved off base. Now I was in town living with everyone else and my truck was a target. I bought the plastic one from Auto zone and the gas thief got it off in two seconds. He got away with 50 dollars worth of gas. The second one I got at NAPA and it was removed in two seconds with a nice big screw driver. Fortunently I didn't loose but one gallon that time. I went out and bought some materials and made a locking cover that covers the whole shaft that sticks out from the cab. Now, they get nothing. My next step is too make plating to protect the undercarrage gas lines. I did go as far as to talk to company's over seas that produce special locking caps. Everything I tried was a dead end. Eventially I will create something that hides inside the tank shaft and doesn't allow any gas to be taken or allow anything in but the gas. Good Luck on your search. Gas and our trucks is too precious these days.

Re: Locking gas cap for 72
First, I would like to apologize for starting this link in the wrong forum. Second, thank you guys for all the leads, I will try to figure out which cap I need and post updates as things progress. Two months ago a thief stole a full tank ($100+) of gas out of my 99 chevy, and broke the cap off and stole it too! I got a locking cap for that and my wifes yukon (she never locks it, argggg!) but they didnt have one for my 72. I have had one on my 66 el camino for years. Well, two days ago I go to my 72 and the cap is on the ground, and sure enough the truck is on empty, heh, only lost about $40 this time! I thought the first theft was at work, but now I know better, it's been at my house. Will keep you all posted, and keep an eye out for the theifs, just so I can introduce myself. Thank you again, AC

Re: Locking gas cap for 72
in the 70's they would slip lower radator hose springs in the filler neck of the tank. Liquid goes in, but a hose wouldn't fit.

Re: Locking gas cap for 72
Locks are only for honest folks, if it was me, and I was hit more than once, I'd fill one up with urine, water, something. I know how and all that, I am not cool with thieves, so I am thick headed enough to "get even"!
