I have a 1968 gmc with rear leaf spring suspension and my diff blew up.Now im pretty sure its a 12 bolt and im wondering if i shoould keep it and rebuild it or if there is a stronger more reliable one that i can just bolt in!! Any suggestions???

12 bolt is a pretty reliable unit if you keep oil in it. Being a leaf spring, you can find a direct replacement in any 73-87 truck as well as 67-72 leaf trucks.

Re: Diff Problems

You may have to remove and reposition the leaf pads, but it is pretty minor. BTW a used diff is just as chancy as the one you broke, can you drive the truck before pulling the rear?? If not pop the cover and look at every tooth, and be sure no metal in the pumkin (watch as the gear lube dumps out). Building one with a posi would cost you about $800-1200 depending on parts and labor, but the rear would be good for another 40 years, just a matter of budget and intended use and length of ownership?
