the 35,000 mile a/c 1970 cab i bought a few years ago
 

i bought this and the front clip ( which except for grille damage , and surface rust on the radiator support and fenderwells ) from a buddy of mine . i took it all apart from a 1970 custom camper 30 , i mean camper . some 30 somehting feet long and over the cab deal .it was a 350 -400 turbo powered . anyways i got the cab , front clip with shroud , 4 core radiator (which is in my stepside right now ) , a/c stuff , including compressor brackest and pulleys . everything but motor trans and chassis ... for ... i think $ 500 . that was about 4-5 years ago .the camper was said to been inside a barn for years , then sat behind it for its last few . its purty at 35,804 miles . its been in my buddy to the souths shop/barn . i have been wanting to strip it and repaint for my stepside , but its only original once . once you do all that work , should you stop driving them ? i have to do some sheetmetal work on the roof because it has the cab clearance lights . other that that , sand , sand and paint . i will either bed liner or por the underside . its rainy today , i got back late last night and had to work late today , but i had to get a couple pics to share . hell , i hadnt seen it since i put in that barn .

Very nice. I would install the cab and front as is on your 72 stepside and paint your box white to match it. If you ever get tired of it setting at your place let me know I sure could find a nice spot in my shop for that.

the thing is , i went to oklahoma city earlier this year and got a stepside box that i bought off ebay and my brother down there sat on... and its white . lol

That`s a gem right there.Those low-mile campers sure can have some sweet cabs,if they aren`t cut into.That TH400 would have been one w/o Park,right?

ok, when i went to leave to go to work , the wind had blown the tarp off so i double checked on the shift indicator ... there is no 'Park' , ?? i cant believe it , but its the first one i've seen . was it something on the custom camper ?

Yes, no park on the campers, at least on my '68. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong here, but I believe the "pawl" is removed. I believe it was so you could get the thing out of park if you were parked on a hill.

yes, from what I read, the campers did not have park on the tranny, so that it would not lock up on a hill, and you could not get it out of park to get it in gear...

I believe the "pawl", or whatever the heck it is called, is in your steering column. So, you wont have the ability to put a vehicle in park if you use that steering column on it. Just a heads up in case you were going to sell it or use it on your project.

Actually, not to hijack the thread, but if somebody could confirm that, I would appreciate it. I am going to put a tilt column in my truck and I was hoping that would give me park. Is there a modification to do to the tranny???

so the column is tricked ? can i take it apart and screw with it , i have other auto columns for parts , this ones like new . does the trans have park , cause the guy i bought the cab from still has it .

I searched an old thread and the comment was made that the pawl is in the tranny. So, the column is probably fine. It sounds like if you want park, you have to modify the tranny.

Modding the tranny is easy and parts are easy to find. You just pull the pan and add the lock that keeps it in park to the side of the valve body. Takes like 15 min if i remember correctly. Been awhile since ive been into a 400. Someone correct me if im wrong.

did some cleaning today . next is to take it all apart . it sure is nice to start with something so clean . the only rust is where the drivers rocker meets the cab corner and on the drivers side cowl

DUDES if you come across one of these tranny's... DO NOT modify it!
a select few old school racers will recognize a higher value for that th400. i don't remember off the top of my head what was so special besides the pawl... but there's something to them that makes 'em trick

progress today . got it all striped , bagged and boxed . then i built a cart , its all pretty clean . there's rust on both sides of the cowl whish probaly just needs to be blasted and sealed .it must have sat out longer than i was told , damn rain , at elast it wated parked under trees :) .there on the passenger it flowed down to the cab support and there is rust on the inner rocker that i will have to cut into . got to get it cleaned and blasted then weld up all the screw holes around the back window from the the pass thru snaps . the roof needs cut up and patched from the cab lights , and cut the back of the cab for a cargo light . sounds easy ...
