Military Tires

I'm looking into tires in the 38 - 40 inch range. The truck will be general purpose off roading (in New England mud, rocks, hills) and be on the street to get there and hopefully back. I'm primarily looking at radials.

Recently I found some info on Michelin military tires and wanted to know if anyone had some experience with them. I'm specifically looking at the following options.

XL 11.00R16 - 38.7 height by 10.9 width
XL 12.50R20 - 40.7 height by 13.1 width
OR
XML 325/85R16 - 38.7 height by 12.9 width
OR
XZL 335/80R20 - 40.7 height by 13.3 width

I also understand Goodyear makes some as does Uniroyal.

Does anyone have a good source for any of these? I guess I would also like to hear opinions about 16" vs 20" rims.... Normally I would be inclined to go with 16" but having been out of the sport for a while I guess I'll take all the advice I can get.

FYI: Running D60 front and 14bff rear with 4:56.

I agree.. SteelSoldiers is one of the best Military Vehicle boards..

As far as tires go.. have you tried Govliguidation? (http://www.govliquidation.com/) May require some transport/shipping though.

Re: Military Tires

I bought a set of XZL 11R-16 from gov liqu. FYI they recently had a sale of 2,200 new ones. I don't know who bought them but they are out there somewhere. The 11's are around 38" tall the 20" are close to 45" the 16" x 20" are 54" tall. These tires are designed to run flat so the sidewall is very very heavy. They run 80 psi. They are noisy, but wear pretty well. If you get a set from gov liqu make plans to pick them up they are heavy and freight could be painful. Mine are around 110 lbs each. I like the tread and the look. I got mine for $380 for 5 of them. Mine were used with maybe 100 miles on them. If your going to wheel heavy I'd look at a lighter tire. There is so much stress don't to it with heavy tires. Just my 2 cents worth.

These guys are the only ones in the US i could find with any 16 in. XLs. I bought 5 from Tommy at Gays and he shipped them to Texas for me. The tires were as described and darn near new. They had 17/32 when new and 4 of mine had 16/32 on them and the other had 15/32. I did have to pay $200 a tire. I called today and talked with him and he said he has some but they are 75-80% tread. Hope this helps if you are still looking. By the way I mounted my tires by hand with no balancing and they ride perfect at 65-70 Mph all day and not too loud at all less, than swampers. Justin

Thanks Grendel, been checking him out. Shipping sorta sucks but the price is right.

I might try to wait it out since I have all winter. I'm hopeing to score 40"+ sneakers (XL 12.50R20 or XZL 335/80R20). I'd hate to do all this work and not have the max clearence possible

Re: Military Tires

I'm not sure if you guys can see the link but I paid $400 DELIVERED for a set of 4 XML 325/85R16.... and they are in excellent condition with 90% of the tread left. I could not find any tire damage. I bought the tires for $300 using buy it now and paid $100 for shipping. The tires went from CA to NH in 4 days.

This was the best deal I have found on ebay by a long shot....

Damn, those 38's would be nice, but I am probably a few inches short on lift (4")...
