Power door conversion question

I have another question about converting to power. I'm going to get a pair of power doors off of a '85 tomorrow to convert my '80.
I realize I can just use the guts but my doors on my '80 have rust and someone repaired them by welding by the hinges and the door now lacks the adjustment needed to align properly with the fender and hood.
so my main question is about the wiring. does it unplug inside the cab somewhere, or do I need to cut wires? how many wires run to the drivers door, and how many run from the drivers to the passengers?
anyone have a schematic?
I would prefer not to stumble in blindly.
oh and also, do i have to pull the fenders to pull the doors?
Thanks for all the help, it is mucho appreciated.

so my main question is about the wiring. does it unplug inside the cab somewhere, or do I need to cut wires? Yes it does. And you will need the harness that plugs into the harness and runs from side to side as well as the 30amp circuit breaker in the fuse block for the power windows and the power door lock relay that should be mounted to the top of the accelerator bracket. There are 2 power leads that pluginto the fuse panel and 2 ground leads that plug onto the 6-way ground plug behind the cluster on the left. Make sure when you install it into your truk that you properly mount the P/L relay otherwise they won't workhow many wires run to the drivers door, and how many run from the drivers to the passengers?

oh and also, do i have to pull the fenders to pull the doors? No you can simply unbolt the doors from the hinges. HOWEVER; In order to drill out the proper size holes in the proper locations on either side of the cab, it's best to loosen if not remove the fenders to get into it better. When I cut my suburban for power windows/locks/mirrors I didn't and I messed up the holes with the hole saw(egg shaped not round and had to glob in some silicone sealant around it.
Thanks for all the help, it is mucho appreciated.

Good Luck and have fun!!

Re: Power door conversion question

BLE 'BURBAN, your info was very helpful!
I got the doors, the passenger side is junk and missing parts, including the power window motor, so I will probably look for another or just use my shell. Driver's door is complete minus the double power window switch. I got the complete power door harness, including that little PIA lock relay
I will get some pics on here of the pieces and parts and start another thread when i do the change over. should be relatively simple and straight forward, I've heard that one before :)
Thanks again for the info

This makes a little more sense now. Good thing you asked the question on the door wiring, because I now get to go dig around a salvage yard for the center harnes and circuit breaker.

I'm doing the power door conversion right now. I drilled the holes in my non-power doors/cab today. Doors are off, fenders are on. The dimples from the factory sure help out. Here are some pics.

Re: Power door conversion question

For anyone interested, I have what appears to be a complete power door lock and power window setup I am looking to part with.

I'll put it in the for sale area on Friday once I get some pictures.

(sorry to tread on your thread..)

I just swapped my '80 to a '73-'74 front end and to my suprise there where dimples where I needed to drill...I was quite happy...takes all the guess work out

You can't put factory power windows in your 73...if it still has the original 73 doors. 73-76 doors are different than 77+...they were redesigned in 77 to accomodate PW/PL.
