Rear winch install finally

Well, it took long enough to finally get a winch for the rear bumper that has already been on the truck for 3 years.

It is nothing too special of a winch but better than nothing and a lot stronger and faster than the old Hickey Sidewinder that is on the front. My wife asked what I wanted for Christmas and I said, well there is this winch on sale...

4WP had these Smittybilt XCR10’s on sale for $399 so it was my belated Christmas present that the UPS man dropped off today. Good wife.

It is nice to finally see a cable and hook poking out of the fairlead!

Nice looking winch, looks right at home back there.

Now it's time to get stuck and test it out!! Great truck btw..

That is a great looking winch bumper. What's the weight rating on the winch. I'm sure you will put it to the test given the wheeling you do.

Thanks guys.

Hey Yukon, it rated 10,000 lbs. The actual weight of the winch on the packing slip was 88 lbs.

The funny thing about this rear bumper. It started off as a homemade winch bumper on the front of my buddy’s J20 then he reworked it to fit a Suburban he owned for a while. Then we reworked it again and flipped it upside down and bolted it on the rear of my truck.

Great install and great wife!! That will come in handy.

How will this new install be used most frequently do you expect?

Pulling your buddies forward through an obstacle or getting yourself outta a jamb?

Re: Rear winch install finally

 Probably both. I grew up around tow trucks so I guess I am accustom to winches being rear mounted. With some of the tight trails in the high country it seems more times than not I need a winch to pull myself out of a jamb backwards than further into one. I don’t have a lot of faith in the old Sidewinder on the front to have enough grunt to get me out of the real hairy stuff even with a few snatch blocks. Also, if the Sidewinder breaks parts are going to be very hard to come by and I don’t want to remove it as it is kind of a neat period correct nostalgia thing for the 70’s truck so a heavier winch on the back is good security.

I spent yesterday afternoon routing and securing the big fat 1/0 gauge battery cable down from battery to the winch. Glad I ordered this cable a couple years ago before the cost of copper went up. The battery cable alone weighed about 15 to 20 lbs.

John, will do. I’ll let you know when we plan the next snow trip. I still need parts to fix the broken front axle shaft as Randy’s Ring and Pinion has the chrome-moly shafts on back order and I haven't found a Dana 60 that I am willing to give an arm and leg for.
