fan shroud

hey i was wondering my truck doesn't have a fan shroud and i just had a 383 stroker with vortec heads built and put in. he told me that if i didn't have a fan shroud it was going to run hot in the summer time. i was wondering if this was true. he said the fan would not be able to draw enough air off the radiator because there is too much of a gap between the two. if this is true can anyone help me out?

yes you do need to run a fan shroud for the cooling system to work properly

Re: fan shroud

Think of it like this: you want to drink from a glass of water. If you use a straw (shroud) the water comes right up. But if you use no straw and just suck at the water from above the glass you get no water (airflow). the shroud is the straw the fan uses to get airflow through the radiator.

On some cars though you will be ok with no shroud IF the fan blades are at a distance of one inch or less from the radiator fins, though that way it won't pull air from the outer corners.

I know that LMC sells them. Other people may chime in with other vendors too.

Have you considered an electric fan setup with their own shrouds?

I have done the electric fans on my 84 truck and also my 91 work truck. The fans are worth some HP and also MPG.
