Need detailed pics of front brake line routing
Got my stainless brake line set yesterday for my '72 and am having a heckuva time trying to figure out where all the front brake lines go. Rears are done and the front-to-back line is sitting in place. But I just can't figure out the front and having long ago stripped off the old stuff with reckless abandon, I don't have anything for reference.
Anyone happen to have detailed pics from their own build that they could share? Or anyone willing to take some pics for me? I really thought I'd make some progress on it this weekend, but I'm stuck. Thanks, Brent |

stand by...taking some for you now!!!

Re: Need detailed pics of front brake line routing
Waiting patiently. THANK YOU in advance! I fell like I've tried every possible combination and nothing makes sense. Probably doesn't help that the brake hoses I ordered from LMC two years ago don't come close to fitting in the holes in the brackets on the crossmember, so I'll be ordering some stainless lines from Inline Tube at my earliest convenience. Without the hoses in place, it's even harder for me to visualize where thing should go. (I work a LOT better when I can see things in place rather than just imagining.)

I think those will be a HUGE help. I'll know for sure tomorrow. Thanks again! :)

Re: Need detailed pics of front brake line routing
Just went out and in the warm glow of the security light in the driveway I was able to get the two lines from the front calipers / hoses routed. That leaves me with three lines.
I know I need to get a tee fitting as seen in your second pic. One of the three remaining lines will go from the tee up to the prop valve, right? Am I correct in assuming that the front brake lines go to the front fitting on the prop valve and the rear brake lines go to the back? What I'm left wondering about are the two remaining lines. I'm assuming both are for the rear brakes, one of which will connect to the front-to-back line and run across the crossmember, and the other will connect that one to the prop valve. Correct? Are these connected to each other with just a union? Thanks again! |
Re: Need detailed pics of front brake line routing
Bump. Anyone know about the fittings between the lines? Would like to get started on this ASAP before much more of the day goes by. Thanks! :)

Ok, got the fittings sorted and know where all the lines go. But one last important question regarding the front-to-back line. Look at the pic below and tell me if you see something wrong.
I don't have anything clamped into place yet, so the angles may be slightly off. But that odd curving of the long line doesn't seem right. Obviously the angle doesn't match up with the cross-frame line (wire-wrapped line to the left). Does anyone have a photo of this particular section of brake line "in action" so I can see what it's supposed to look like? The curves make no sense and while it's trivial to straighten it out and make it line up, I want to do it right. I just don't see anything that it should be curving around and it doesn't make sense. Thanks again! |

These are not the best pics in the world but here are some shots that may help you. Mine is a 72 and I bought the Inline tube kit. It was exactly like stock and routed the same as original.

A couple more that may help. On a stock disc brake truck the front brake lines run forward under the motor mount and loop around to a bracket where the hose attaches and is held by a c-clip. The line actually goes forward and is in front of the A-arm. On the drum brake trucks these lines went to the rear of the A-arm. Also the lines (in 72 at least) ran down from the proportioning valve on the outside of the frame.

Re: Need detailed pics of front brake line routing
Those pics will certainly help, Mike. Thanks!
I've decided that I really need to get the correct clips to hold everything in place before I worry too much more about this. The brake hoses I bought a couple years ago from LMC don't come close to fitting through the hex-shaped holes in the brackets on the crossmember, so tomorrow I'm ordering a set of braided stainless hoses from Inline Tube, along with the clip set. |
Re: Need detailed pics of front brake line routing
That's what I did but I got the stock rubber hoses. It's good quality stuff. The clips are not exact but close enough and work well. The only thing it did not come with was the c-clips that hold the hose in the bracket but they may have them available, I'm not sure. I reused my old ones.

Re: Need detailed pics of front brake line routing
Good to hear. I've got the C-clips already (new, came with these LMC hoses that don't fit) but need the frame clips to hold everything in place. Hope the stuff can get here by Friday so I don't lose another weekend of working on the project.

Re: Need detailed pics of front brake line routing
Old thread, but I wanted to pull it back up to say thanks for the pics. I was scratching my head on a 70 I am working on for sure. Got the frame bare, so I had no reference. I have some issues to work out since it has a 81 cross-member, but nothing major.
I do need to know where to find the junction block for the front 2 lines though. Don't see that in LMC. |
Re: Need detailed pics of front brake line routing
Good thread here.
What size tube are the front lines? 3/8"? |
Re: Need detailed pics of front brake line routing
Old thread, but these are great pics. I'm about to need them as I swap my old '70 cross member out for a '72 and brake hardware.

These pics have been a life saver, thanks guys! :metal:

Re: Need detailed pics of front brake line routing
I believe that curved end shown where the two lines (with red caps on them) goes to the rear by the rear axle, where the hose attaches to the hardline.

Re: Need detailed pics of front brake line routing
I was running my lines the other day and I just came across this thread now.
I notice one member has the lines run inside the front frame rail on the drivers side (with headers) and the other has them run outside the frame rail. Anyone know if there are any heat related issues with running inside the rail? |
Re: Need detailed pics of front brake line routing
I certainly wouldn't run them right next to headers, but that's just me. The brakes are the most important system in your vehicle.
|
Re: Need detailed pics of front brake line routing
I read that some models had the lines run inside the frame from the factory, so when routing mine I played with both inside and out. I determined inside may be fine for exhaust manifolds but my headers run right next to the brake lines if they are on the inside of the frame.
So long story short, I routed mine on the outside to avoid header heat. |
