Need help with a new cardboard gas tank cover,...
 

I purchased a new cardboard gas tank cover from Classic Parts for my '69 swb.
I have the old one to compare, the new one to.

So here's my question:
What do you use to "glue/secure" the corners together?
I got no instructions what so ever. What the best method?
Hot glue? Contact cement? Silicone adhesive?
Restoration experts speak up, please.

Glue the corners together? Not following you... The ones I've seen and had just sit against the tank and are not fastened to it at all. Can you clarify what you mean?

Mine came pre-cut with all the fold marks identified,... but is just a flat piece of cardboard. (I guess to make it easier to ship)
It had to be folded and the corners glued together,... so it will wrap around the tank. I'll see if I can get a pic tonight.

I don't think they were glued in the corners or anywhere else.
Pretty sure they were just folded, and placed over the tank.

although I could be wrong...

You need to use some large staples to hold the ends together once you have everything bent in the proper position.

That's what I was wondering,... even though the original one had no type of staple or rivet.

It definitely won't hold it's shape by just bending. Something has to hold the corners together.

Keith I will look at mine tonight, but I think it had staples holding the thing together. I could be completely off, but I'll let you know tonight.

I guess I was blind yesterday.
There are definately staples in the corners.
So,... where do I get an "over-grown" desk stapler to duplicate these?
Any other suggestions?

Mine came with the large staples. I believe you'll have to use a pin prick or a large needle and punch through the hole indentions, then put the staples in and bend them over.

Use staples like the type you might use when installing insullation to a 2x4 they are similar to the original type, just push through and fold over by hand. They are the arrow brand found at lowes or home depot.

Those staples look a lot like brass industrial shipping staples. PM me the dimensions of the staple and I'll check our shipping department at work and if they are what you need, I'll send you a handful.

Why not a staple gun? The staples are big enough........do it over wood to punch the holes, take the staple out, and then do it over something like a vise to bend them. Not sure if it would work, but I would try it............
