Has anyone run into this problem
 

I swapped my original 350 with one from a '92 chevy truck and now it sits back too far. The distributor is touching the firewall and the valve covers are only 1/2" or so away. I am going to move everything up 2 inches, I have converted to electric fans so I have no issues with clearance. I have a 4x4 and my engine sits just like yours. It is my understanding that the two wheel drive motor mounts are up a couple inches.

When you swapped, did you end up using the 6 cylinder mount location? A '92 350's block mounts are in the same place as the original 350.

you definetly used the wrong mounting holes...You have to move it forward and problem solved...

It looks like your truck is a 4 wheel drive so its probably in the right position. Its a common problem using an HEI. Mine was very tight, I had to cut a bolt off protruding from the firewall to get my HEI to work. the valve covers are also very close. If you move it forward you may need to mess with the drive shafts. An aftermarket distributor with a smaller cap should work fine. Doug

I mounted the new motor in the same location as the original one, I will look later today to see if I have any pics of the original motor before I pulled it.

You may have to drill holes in the crossmember to use the same mounts-but its not hard to do with a long drill bit.

OK....I found some pix of the motor pre-pull. They aren't that great of shots but you can see that the motor is back pretty far and I put in a few shots of the crossmember. I was just going to drill new holes in the frame move the whole crossmember up 2 2/4". If anyone has a better Idea, I am all ears.

Can't you just unbolt it and move it forward? Looks like there are already holes there...or am i missing something?

there are only holes on one side, I am going to drill new ones on the other. Using those holes the motor will move up 2.25 inches, which should give me plenty of room. I would then just have to remeasure my drivelines, which sucks because I just had them redone. Live and learn I guess.

That does suck. I moved mine back 2 inches so I could use my driveshaft instead of having one made.

Just thought I would give an update. I moved everything forward yesterday and took my drivelines in today to get them the correct length. Now that the cab is back off I am going to replace the cab mounts while it's on it's back. Thanks to everyone for their help.
