What Gear Ratio for 44's ?
I am running a 454 30 over, sm465 , np205 to a d60 and a 14 bolt on 44's. I grooved out my rubber and now the 4.56's I am running just don't have the jam. I have scoured the net looking for info but there is very little available. What does everybody think? I am sure I am making about 400 ponies at the crank, but they are not rocking it like I would like them to. What are guys running?

Re: What Gear Ratio for 44's ?
Try 5.13's , they are very popular with trucks with 44's and up running one tons. I only have 4.10's right now in my truck with 49's with about the same combo but th400, and I am going to go with some 5.13's eventually. They are only available aftermarket though. You could try 4.88's but it won't gain a whole lot over the 4.56's. Trevor

Re: What Gear Ratio for 44's ?
I would definately go with the 5.13s over 4.88. The expense to install them is the same either way and you will get much better throttle response and drivability.
Just be sure to take good care of them immediately after the install. They need a proper "break-in". This means very short "around the block" type driving for several heat cycles. They will get amazingly hot even in this short time. Do this a few times, then double the distance, triple the distance, always allowing full cooling between rounds. This along with a synthetic gear lube will give you the best assurance of long life for your gears. |
Re: What Gear Ratio for 44's ?
No matter what gear you run....44 inch tires need a lot more than 400 HP, to feel like you have a strong truck!!!!
Especially with the sm465 tranny...Sure its super low in 1st and 2nd....But its a long jump when you get to 3rd and 4th. From 3rd to 4th on a hill is when you know you need more power. I know gears are cheaper than engine mods, but think about it for the future, if you wanna FEEL the power with tires of that size.. A....... |
Re: What Gear Ratio for 44's ?
I agree.Going that big just goes against going zippy. You need the gears and mucho ponies for the rig to jump out of the hole.

Re: What Gear Ratio for 44's ?
Yea I am going to to say try the 5.13s out and don't waste any money on the 4.88s. Just a thought as well you may want to try and get more power out of that BB cheaply if you can cause those are big tires to turn and they need lots of HP! just my .02 cents.
