Car steering box

Has anybody thought about installing a power steering box from a car, that mounts inside the frame rails, so you can run wider front tires? I'm not having much search luck.

You'll probably get more info on doing a rack and pinion conversion.

the problem with inside the rails is the styeering linkage is in front of the crossmember

Are they a rear steer?

Some front, some rear. 79 impala had linkage in front of the suspension crossmember. 78 and up G-body had linkage in front also. I think where the problem comes in is the crossmember in front of the suspension on a chevy truck. Kinda hard to get a car sector in there as-is. You would have to box the frame on both sides, relocate the crossmember, fabricate a drag link, fab an idler arm mount, fab tie rod adjusters.

Myself, I prefer to have "manufactured" or "engineered" associated with something as important as the steering.

I seen Flaming River has a rack and pinion conversion kit. The title says 73-87 but there's a pic of our trucks. It is quite pricey though.

You would not only have to do the above mentioned steps you would have to relocate the idler arm and come up with a center link that had the proper spacing for the pitman arm and Idler arm to connect to it.
I haven't studied the rack and pinion setups on newer heavier cars so I don't know what is out there that may work.
I think most of the front wheel drive 85 and up cars have rear steering with the racks and the rear wheel drive cars have regular steering boxes.

You might check under a 2002 or so Lincoln Continental and see what the rack under those looks like.

I already have a rack. Its a center steer type from an Intrepid. I have to fab up everything anyway, I was just looking for more options.
