Locking glovebox?

Can't recall I have ever seen one... except in my '68. I don't have the key for it though. It's kinda boogerd up from someone trying random keys.

Anyone have one in their truck?

I got lucky and found an original in my local junkyard with it's original key. Trevor

I guess there is nothing rare about it. The area I grew up in was a farm community. It's rare to see one of our trucks in the junkyards around there with anything fancier than power steering

Re: Locking glovebox?

yeah, I have only seen one too. That's why I was happy to get it from the junkyard. We our in farm country here too, and it's pretty uncommon to find rarer items, though I have seen my fair share of tow hooks over the years. Trevor

I added one to mine. It was a set of locks and ignition switch, so i only have one key for all my locks.

Re: Locking glovebox?

I've gotten the glovebox locks from the Chevy dealer in the past. More recently I got the matching set [doors, IGN, glovebox] from LMC. I have to park my truck downtown in urban areas all day, or night, sometimes. Security is an issue. The OEM lock is still cheesy, but it's better than nothing.

Re: Locking glovebox?

I asked the counterman at my Chevy dealer about these a bunch of years ago and he pulled a box out from under the counter with odd glovebox latches. He matched up 3 or 4 keys with locks and gave them to me.i think I still have a couple and who the heck ever locks the glovebox anyway?
I was interested in yet another cool feature for my trucks. But,it all started with wanting a lockable compartment for my Blazer when I put a soft top on it.

Because of the size of the gb door a lock will probably stop a 9 year old and that's questionable. I have seen guys loose a key and just grab the top sides of the door and pull it open. Kinda kiddin yourself if you think that it will stop anyone,,,or even slow them down for that matter IMO-Keith

Re: Locking glovebox?

Locks on anything are just to keep honest people honest. Sometimes all it does is make a thief do thousands of dollars worth of damage to snag that old radar detector that isn't worth 10 bucks.

Stealing petty stuff from cars is so bad in my hometown that the police chief commented in an interview with the newspaper that people should consider clearing out any valuables and leaving cars unlocked at night. That way, the thief can just go in for a look, find nothing, then leave.

I found one in a parts truck, but it didn't have a key. I took it to a locksmith and they made me a key for $15.

I think it works pretty well for all but crazed meth heads.Yeah,if someone wants to rip a glovebox door off they can.Figure if they can get into the truck they can get in the glovebox.Putting a valuable in a locked glovebox sure works better than leaving it out.

I have made up a few sets that included the glove box lock. I sold a few on e-Bay and a couple on here.

I forgot to add that any GM car glove box lock from 1940-1957 and any GM truck glove box lock from 1954-1972 will fit the the '67-'72 Chevy and GMC trucks.

Good info!!

If we still had rep points I would be sending some your way. I'll just have to pretend.

Re: Locking glovebox?

My burb has one matched to the ignition key.
Never thought it was some "rare" thing to have, actually thought it was pretty comon to all trucks.

Live n' learn I guess

Re: Locking glovebox?

Yeah, locking the glovebox is a fool's paradise. A professsional thief would just rip open the cardboard underneath the dash with a box knife. Unless one were to fab a glovebox out of sheet aluminum.

Re: Locking glovebox?

Yeah, that`s true. It`s as easy as stealing the whole truck.

I took a glovebox button from a`69 and put it in my`55 car I had.I drove that car or awhile with the glovebox door hanging open.Bugged the crap out of me.I was thinking how fun it would be to find one.I kept looking at that whole with a notch and thinking it looked an awful lot like the one in these trucks. Finally,I took one out of a`69 parts truck and,"Wahlah!!",that daggone glovebox door could finally stay shut!

And ya don't have to walk back to the block. Hmmm. :bann:
Even with the gizmo latch locked, they still pop open when you're off the road and seriously boondockin'.
