71 Gmc stock 16x6 steel wheels
Does anybody know what a good tire size is to run on this wheel with a 4 in. lift? I was gonna order wider steel replacements, but I figure I might as well use what I have. I am installing a 4in. rough country lift and will be hanging a snowplow off the front. Problem is that wheel is very skinny, hard to think of a good size? 245/75/16? 265/75/16? Would like to see some pics of what the rest of you run on this wheel please......

Try to contact Bouncytruck on here. He has a blazer with the factory 16" x 6" wheels and he even has a 4" lift on it. I will try and get you a pic of his blazer. Trevor

Re: 71 Gmc stock 16x6 steel wheels
I`d run a 285/75-16 with a 4" lift.what would be perfect is 255/85-16s.They are about 34" with a taller/narrower profile.I can only find them in BFG M/Ts anymore. They are the next size up from 235/85-16s which are what Bouncytruck is running and the closest replacement for a stock bias 7.50-16.
i`d want tall skinnys on a low truck and it will look awesome.I highly recommend the BFG 255/85s.Here are some 285/75 Uniroyal all terrains on my green`92 and the BFG 255/85s on a friend`s`99.Both on stock width wheels: http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...5/IMG_1508.jpg |

Re: 71 Gmc stock 16x6 steel wheels
I have a set of 315/75/16 load range D, that I'd like to use, although a bit wide for snow the price is right "FREE" so I had ordered some cragar soft 8's from jegs 16x8 but the back spacing wasnt right. It was 5in and 4in seems to be the norm on our trucks. When I called about returning the wheels they put me thru to the tech department where i learned they could be made to a 4-1/8 backspace for an additional 10.00 I tried mounting several different sizes on my stock wheels today, but they all looked like pizza cutters on the 6in wide wheels. Plus my cost on each size was at least 100.00 for 8plys and up.

Re: 71 Gmc stock 16x6 steel wheels
I wouldn`t pay a dime extra to anyone to make ordinary offset wheels.I bought wheels for decades and never even had a thought on back spacing. They just fit.It didn`t matter who made the truck or car or who made the wheels. Now,they got all queer with wheel and tire sizes and they want to charge for normal? They won`t be selling me any wheels.
Do Toyo and Cooper still make 255/85s?When I was looking a year ago my independent tire dealer could only come up with BFG M/Ts,so I went back to the 285/75s.The BFGs aren`t a good work truck tire, from my experience.I was running Kelly AWRs but they stopped making them. |
Re: 71 Gmc stock 16x6 steel wheels
I hear ya' Tim, I guess thats what got me in this mess in the first place. Its hard for me to find a style of wheels that I like. When I found these cragar soft 8's I thought it was a good solution, not too fancy regular steel wheels that just have 8 holes in them .....Great! I guess its my bad that I didnt check the backspace on the website. Now I have them and either have to return all 4 and the center caps or find a solution. I just thought at the time that$200.00 worth of wheels was a better solution than $400.00 in tires, since I have a set.

Re: 71 Gmc stock 16x6 steel wheels
It`s good to know Cooper still makes those.I guess my tire guy didn`t check into them all.I had him check warehouses for old stock, but I guess no one dealt with Cooper. He was mainly Kelly until Goodyear started playing games and now he`s mainly Dunlop. But,totally independent and will get you whatever.I`ll have to look for those 255/85s for a mud & snow tire.
