More leg room in a '72?
 

Is there any aftermarket seats anyone could recommend?

Has anyone used the buckets seats from a 99+ with the shoulder restraint in the seat?

You can get some more room with a seat from about 89 up Chevy.

I went with buckets from an 05 avalanche with the shoulder restraint and to be honest I wish there was a little more leg room. Although they look great and are comfortable. Something a little more low profile I think would have been better

This is when i was putting mine in along with everything else:). It should give you an idea. I feel like the steering wheel is kinda in my face.

I had put a '94 Chevy split bench in my last '68 and found it took away leg room. Most of the newer truck bench seats tend to be thicker than the older ones.

I ended up swapping in a seat of first gen Toyota Supra buckets on my own brackets and that was much nicer.

In my current '68, I have a set of '06 Miata buckets I am going to use. They are like new and I got them for free. :D Adding the center console with them.

Hi,
I went through this problem for months because the co-owner of my truck is 6'10" and it's uncomfortable for him to drive.

There are basically 4 measures to take (as I've found)

1. Swap the steering wheel to something with a diameter of 13.5" or smaller. This helps a ton. Saves about 3"

2. Swap the steering column to either an aftermarket (could be thousands of dollars) or get a telescoping column from a newer donor vehicle. Saves about 2"

3. Find a replacement seat (as you're looking at) and swap that. Not sure how much room it will save, if any.

4. Take the truck to a fabrication shop and actually have them alter the "bump" that the seat sits on. If you took that bump out of the truck floor, and flattened it, then you have more room to put a seat in there with a fabricated mount on the bottom. Could save 4"

Add all that up, and the MAX room you could create between yourself and the stock wheel would be around 11". Basically, if you haven't already swapped the steering wheel, do that immediately. You can do it yourself, it costs about $100 and it gives you a lot more room. If that's enough, then you're done. IF not, follow the next 3 options.

There's also a How-to post in the FAQ's on how to move the wheel closer to the dash.It requires shortening the column but seems to be a great mod.

shorten the column, get a seat with a thinner seat-back, or a smaller wheel. the only real way to add leg space is to modify the foot-well/ lower firewall, and that is the long answer but the only real way to add room. there was a post on this mod a few years ago but i can't find it as yet.
