Gear Ratio ??
:canada: :bowtie: My 68 chevy 1/2 ton is going to be a nice driver. I plan on using a 350 with approx. 300 horses. I want good acceleration off the line, so what rearend gear ratio do you guys suggest, and what will it give me on the top end???

I'm going to be running a turbo 350 for tranny.

Depending on what tire size you end up running, I would say a 3.23 - 3.31 is as low(geared) high(number) as your gonna want to go. You cant have the best of both worlds. I have 4.11's in my 68 right now and am gonna swap it out for a 3.08 here real quick. I spend most of my time on the freeway so the top end is way more important for me that the low end.
Good luck, Jason |
3.23 to 3.42 is about all i would go with the th350 not to radical just a good compramise as stated above.
Now if you want the adrenaline shakes:D with an ear to ear grin go with somthing like a 4.56 possi and a 4speed auto. |
I spend a little time on the Freeway so I went with 3.55, it puts me at about 3500RPM at 85MPH with 30" tires. I can still get off the line pretty good.

Based on a 28" tall tire, 3.73 gears are a good all around gear. If you do more hyway driving, I go along with the other guys on that mid 3s gear. You will still have decent acceleration, but be able to cruise a little faster. as far as top speed, i have seen the 3.73s render the stock speedo totaly useless....crazyL:)
