c10 rear in a c20???
i want a five lug rear, is it possible to just instal a stock c10 rear end in my '66 c20? still use all the same trailing arms, brake lines, etc?

Re: c10 rear in a c20???
My 65C20 has a 65C10 rear end with a 5 lug cpp conversion.

Re: c10 rear in a c20???
what's involved with the conversion? what's different on the 2 rear ends?
|
Re: c10 rear in a c20???
The conversoin takes you from 6 lug to 5. You just have to swap out axles and put the new drums on that come with the kit. The 8 lug rear end is more heavy duty. I also moved my panhard mount "frame side" back about an inch to get it to line up again.http://www.classicperform.com/Store/.../6369RAC-5.htm You could use drums from your local parts house. Re: c10 rear in a c20???
Hey team,
I'm going to take this a little further. I have a 71 5 lug rear axle that I want to put into my 68c10 ( swapping front drums to discs with a set of cpp spindles). So I want the front and rear to have the same bolt pattern (obviously!!!!!) The 71 rear axle is a 12 bolt and the 68 axle is too. The 71 has 3.73 gears and is a factory posi unit. I was going to put 3.08 gears in it but it won't accept them according to what I have been told and even summit racing shows in their catalogue that there are 3 different carriers for the chevy 12 bolt truck axle. I was hoping to go to more friendly highway gears but I can't do this with my 71 axle and my 68 axle has like 4.11 gears. Any suggestions?????? I didn't want to have to find another axle or buy a carrier to fit. Perhaps I'm going to have to go with a 5 speed with overdrive and dump my powerglide!!! Riley |
Re: c10 rear in a c20???
The 3/4 ton axle won't accept the 1/2 ton axle shafts...but the whole 1/2 ton axle will bolt right in, as long as it came from a coil spring truck. what are you running on the front?

Re: c10 rear in a c20???
If you swap rear ends keep your C20 pan hard bar. It is longer than a C10. If you change to a C10 pan hard then you will need to change the frame mount. Just put the C10 rear end in and convert it. If your gonna do c-notches get ready to cut threw 1/2" of steel. C20s have an extra plate over the rear end. What are you gonna do to the front?

Re: c10 rear in a c20???
as far as the front goes i'm still on the fence, i need 5 lug but don't have the cash for a kit... any suggestions? i did convert the drums up front from drum to '84 disc but they are 8 lugs and i hate them!! can i put a 5 lug rotor on the '84 3/4 ton spindles? prob. not right? help.

Re: c10 rear in a c20???
All you need to get 5 lug in the front is to get the lower control arm, spindles, rotors, calipers, etc from a '73-'87 C10 pickup, Suburban, or 2wd Blazer. You don't have to buy expensive aftermarket parts to do it. The parts you need should be able to be found in a local wrecking yard, or in newspaper classifieds, Craigslist, etc.
For the rear you just need either a complete rear end from a '64-'70 C10 and get the conversion axles, or a '71-'72 which already has the 5 lug axles. Quote:

Re: c10 rear in a c20???
To get 3.08 gears in that '71 12 bolt, you're going to have to change the carrier to a 3 series carrier....no way around it. You could most likely sell the 3.73's and factory posi to offset the cost. You may be able to find a 3 series carrier used as they are the same from '65 to '82 in the 12 bolt truck rear ends. Or as you said go to an OD trans.
