Power Steering Pump Question
My 68' originally came with a 396 and used a power steering pump with a remote reservoir that was attached to the core support. I'm putting in 383 sbc and want to ditch the remote pump for the pump with reservoir attached. Is that the Saginaw?
I want to know if I can use the same steering box and just swap out the pumps. What's required to make this change? New PS bracket, PS pump and maybe hoses? Hoses should fit the same steering box right? |
Re: Power Steering Pump Question
My guess is the same steering box was used on both. I picture of yours would help to confirm that.

Re: Power Steering Pump Question
the box is the same.
You need all new brackets since you are going big block to small block (seems backwards to me... just messin) You may or may not need new hoses/lines. |

Not backwards, cheaper! |
Re: Power Steering Pump Question
LOL! I know. Big blocks are a bit spendy.
Heck, I'm thinking of offering my 454 in trade for a good 307! Talk about bass ackwards... |

GM PN 26010328 Power Steering Pump is the one you want. See Pic Below. 572 on 396 BB mounts. Power steering hoses snake under frame just fine, but you'll have to make your own. I used Russell stainless overbraid hose with AN -6 pressure fittings on HP side.
Longhorn man sez: "LOL! I know. Big blocks are a bit spendy. Heck, I'm thinking of offering my 454 in trade for a good 307! Talk about bass ackwards... ." I sez: "yeah but they're faaasssst and sooo cool." |
Re: Power Steering Pump Question
That's my dream motor *sigh*
Thanks for the info |
Re: Power Steering Pump Question
I have big blocks in both of my trucks, and another on the garage floor, but all three of them put together aren't as cool as that sucker! Heck, all three of them together aren't as strong as that one either.
That last part is mildly depressing. :( |
