How much should I pay for 72 big block and A/C
I found a 1972 C20 deluxe, The body is toast but under the hood it has the most unmolested factory big block I have ever seen. It has all of the A/C components with not even the lines missing as well as power-steering with the remote reservoir. On the inside the floor boards are almost all of the way gone. But the dash is in perfect uncut condition with all of the A/C components untouched. I think it was a highlander as it had the orange plaid seat and was two tone orange and white with full trim. I poured some gas in the carb and she fired right up and sounded really healthy. the oil looked great and the oil pressure was strong. If I buy this truck it would be for just the engine, engine components and a/c parts. What should I be willing to pay? Thanks.

$800-$1000

Really!? I hope it is not worth that much to him. I have a lot of experience with these trucks but not with the big block ones. I thought the big blocks were fairly common. What makes them worth so much if they are not in a SWB Super? I want it so hopefully some day I can put together a 72 SWB Big block fully loaded Cheyenne Super - Clone.

I would honestly say $800-1200 for sure. A good running big block my way is usually around $600-800, and all the big block brackets run all of that if not more. There weren't a lot of big block trucks as compared to 350 trucks. Trevor

around here they're asking $800 just for a complete bigblock without accessories and needing rebuild

The complete accessory brackets (ac/alt/ps) and pulleys are worth around $700-800....

Re: How much should I pay for 72 big block and A/C
Well I went and bought it. I got a screaming deal. I will take some pics and post them in the next couple days. And as a bonus he through in a 1970 Chevy that is in really good shape body wise but has had the engine and trany pulled. They where worthless to him because he didnt like that they both had dismantling titles.
Maybe I will be making one truck out of the two. I could pull the body off of the 72 and put the 70's body on the 72's 3/4 ton frame and use the 72 grill. I just wish i had a short box bed and frame so that I could start building a black fully loaded Cheyenne super. I already have a tilt column, center console, Vac gauge, and the nice door panels. Every thing I have is even sprayed and ready just waiting in my attic. I just need to find a tac dash, bucket seats, and an Am/Fm radio now. And of course a short bed frame and bed box. I already pulled the 70 grill to start cleaning it up as it is in a lot better shape than the one I have on my driver. And I pulled the A/C control panel out of the 72 to put in my driver as well as it is in basically perfect shape. Just with those two items I have made my money back. It was a great day!!! Ok I need to shut up now, it is just that I am so excited and you guys are the only ones that understand my sickness. Heaven knows my poor wife doesn't. |

Judging by the asking price of $425 I would say you did very well. What price did you settle on?

Re: How much should I pay for 72 big block and A/C
I got the pair of trucks for $400. I already took off the 70's inner and outer grill for my 70 daily driver. And I robbed the A/C controls and hood cowl off of the 72 for my DD as well. I am wanting to make one truck out of the two now.

wow, what a deal. great job!!!

Re: How much should I pay for 72 big block and A/C
Great deal, congrats! Keep the big block and part whatever you don't need.

Re: How much should I pay for 72 big block and A/C
Does the plaid fabric on my 72's seat mean it is a highlander?
|
Re: How much should I pay for 72 big block and A/C
yeah, highlander was the only ones to get plaid.
You got a screaming deal there. In these parts, a short block big block in questionable shape goes for 4 bills. |
Re: How much should I pay for 72 big block and A/C
I sold a pair of 396s last summer for $750 each. Bolt 2-bolt main blocks, one with a wiped cam (which I disclosed). They were bare, no water pumps or accesories or carbs.
The 396 was still std bore, but otherwise they were nothing special, 265 and 325hp versions respectively. So you made out like a bandit, I think! |
Re: How much should I pay for 72 big block and A/C
I am really excited about this motor. I had no idea what they were worth before finding this one and posting this thread. The funny thing is it doesn’t matter how much it is worth now as I could never talk myself in to selling it. I just hope I do a good job cutting the bed down to a SWB and not end up ruining a good LWB.
Would you guys cut the 72 3/4ton frame down or the 70 1/2ton down for the SWB platform? Either way it will need a 5 lug conversion. |
