Will bigblock fit on smallblock frame mounts?
As the title asks will a big block fit on smallblock frame mounts? I am contemplating building a 454 an putting in my 67, and checkin things out. I have seen it done but what are the pros and cons. I will need to run headers with this motor also. I have forgotten so much since I built this truck back in 2000 its not funny. I was thinking it will work but limits header use or not at all. Thanks in advance folks.

Re: Will bigblock fit on smallblock frame mounts?
ok thank you. I guess I will either fabricate some or con my buddy out of a set he will never use but thinks he might LOL.

Re: Will bigblock fit on smallblock frame mounts?
They will work but like you said they will limit your header choice. I did it but ended up swapping to BBC mounts when I could not find a coated set of headers that fit.

Re: Will bigblock fit on smallblock frame mounts?
I've been researching this for a while and with SB mounts you will have clearance issues between the distributor and firewall. You might also have to move your towers forward a bit. I believe the holes are already drilled, you will just have to unbolt the towers and then bolt them in the next forward set of holes.

Re: Will bigblock fit on smallblock frame mounts?
I used small block stuff, not knowing..lol, about 17 years ago...2 brand of headers fit, one cheap set and my new set are hooker super comps with 2 inch pri's and 3.5 collectors....although i shimed the motor up a 1/4 inch for clearance to prevent the tubes from hitting the small block stands. again this was a LONG time ago and its still going strong today...
I also use a msd dist. assy and have tons of clearance. When i do my stroker kit i will use b.b. stands just because.... |
Re: Will bigblock fit on smallblock frame mounts?
I bought a set of used 72 BBC mounts from a member rather than adapting 73-87 mounts. In the long run it is faster and cleaner looking. They do sell repop 72 mounts and "aftermarket adapt to fit" as well. Choice is yours. BBO

Re: Will bigblock fit on smallblock frame mounts?
I used the small block (clam shell type) mounts.Had to move them ahead just a bit. 3 holes were there, had to drill the 4th.I used sanderson shorty block huggers with no issues.

Re: Will bigblock fit on smallblock frame mounts?
I'm using the '73-'87 clamshell mounts with Flowtech long tubes for '68-'87 truck (part# 31530FLT) and they fit with no clearance issues.
The upper mount bolts lined up with existing holes in the frame. I had to drill one on the bottom. |
Re: Will bigblock fit on smallblock frame mounts?
I haven't had any problems with my mounts yet, but I can see how eventually something might go wrong. The only problems I had with mine were the headers.

Re: Will bigblock fit on smallblock frame mounts?
I ran my 72 with SB mounts for at least 10 years. only problem was the #1 cyl header tube. It hits the perch. I modded the tube and had no issues. Had no issues with dist/firewall clearance, valve cover/brake booster clearance or valve cover/A/C clearance. Only thing I changed was the PS pump and went to remote reservoir. I'm going back with 72 BB mounts though. Not sure how much different a 67 would be.

Yes, if your asking about the rubber mounts. Mine are 350 mounts. I am using the original towers. I had to do it because at that time frame there was no body or shops that manufactured any replacements for my 1970 402BB. The mounts are holding up just fine, 01-10 = 9 Years. Only difference is that it takes the motor a little to the driver side instead of straight. Yes, I will eventually replace them, but till then I am not worried or concerned, because everything is running fine and nothing negative has occurred. Nothing different was done, mine bolted right up and the motor bolted the towers no problem. I do recommend if you have the money and can do it right, then I recommend you go that route. I was transferring from El Centro to San Diego and had to make an executive decision to get the truck running and I am glad I did no regrets. My Headers fit with no issues. Good Luck R/ Billy |
