The frustration!!!
Got a problem fellas, bought drop spindles off the board a while back for my 67 thats already been converted over to disc by the PO. Got the spindles on and the tie rod ends are wrong. The PO had put 71 or newer tie rods on the truck so back and forth the several parts stores and staring at the kid behind the counter who has no idea what a tie rod is to get the 67 inner and outer tie rods. Cool, get it together and now my 15"X10" rims rub the calipers on the inside. I put it together right, there is really no way to mess this up. SO now what? I can't think of anything besides bigger wheels. I am at a lose and don't know where to start with this problem any and all help will be GREATLY APPRECEIATED, thanks in advance.

Re: The frustration!!!
How much does it rub, nad where at on the caliper, can you shave some material off the caliper just enought to get it run. Pics of the problem area would make it easier to see what, where, and how this can be fixed.
BUT maybe somebody else can chime in that has dealt with this problem more than I have. |
Re: The frustration!!!
I had that problem with aftermarket wheels on my 71. I used a grinder and dressed up the caliper. Do not grind very long, do it slow and a little bit at a time. You don't want to risk getting them to hot. Good luck BBO

Re: The frustration!!!
Grind the caliper.
It's normal, since some of the caliper castings aren't that precise. Not everyone has to do it. Also,... look at your lower a-arms, around the balljoint area. Depending on your wheel backspace, you may need to trim there as well. |
Re: The frustration!!!
the wheel covers about half of the caliper. I guess grinding the caliper WILL work didn't think about that. I probably only need to take off 1/4'. Is that too much?

Re: The frustration!!!
Angle grinder worked. Took off about 1/4" on one side while the other side fit perfect. Is that strange?

Re: The frustration!!!
Some caliper castings are really oversized or just rough.
I just ordered a set of Wilwood D52 Aluminum calipers. Wilwood seems to be more interested in making the outside of the caliper really nice. They are sweet! But even so,... they are close on 15" wheels. You should be fine now. |

I have a 67 with disc conversion and dropped spindles... Like you, I had to take the old tie-rod to several shops because mine weren't '67s. I think I had to use '71 outer tie-rods (they made 3 different styles during our body style run).
Before you hit the grinder. I don't recall anyone having 10in wide rims up front on lowered trucks. I have 8in with 4 in backspace. Maybe if you have 18 or 20 inch rims you could get a little more backspace but I doubt a whole inch more. |
Re: The frustration!!!
I have 15x7's on front of my 67 thats converted to disc brakes with drop spindles. If I ran a wider wheel I would have serious issues. I am almost rubbing the lower control arm myself and have actually knocked a wheel weight off cornering hard. LOL Sounded like a bomb went off! Any way you can clearance your caliper if needed but remember a little off and fit the wheel repeat this process til you are clear of interference. I used spindles for 82-87 chevy pickup and the centerlink and tierod ends also. This was done using original crossmember upper an lower control arms changed balljoints to the later years and was very simple.

Re: The frustration!!!
yeah got it all together and at the alignment shop now waiting on the call to pick it up.

Re: The frustration!!!
I have a 67 but the way I got around it was put a 72 front cross member on mine, with factory disc brakes. I am running 10" wide wheels on the front with no rubbing! I know this doesnt help but this is what I did!
