Undoing lifts?
Searched but didn't seem to find an answer. Looking at some 77-87 squares for my new driving daughter. Found a couple of nice ones but with body lift which is not what I want. In particular I keep seeing 3", 6" or 9" frame/axle and 3" body. Undoing a body lift would seem pretty easy, just need factory length cushions and bolts, right? But on a frame/axle lift, what would you have to do? Replace the springs/hangers with factory parts? Do these usually involve rewelding preches or hangers?
As you can tell I'm not a 4 wheel guy, but the daughter would like a mild one... but the road to school is curvey and banked funny and the last thing she needs is a big lift. Thanks! |

Yea, you need factory length body spacers and bolts for the body lift. And For the suspension it should only be putting in some factory leaves, and getting shorter drivelines.
They might have changed the rear axle perches, but most people just use shims. To get the pinion angled up to the t case. And if they changed the perches it would require welding new ones in place. |

As was said, the body lift is straight forward. The spring lifts are a little more complicated but done easily enough. You should be able to find someone to trade some stock springs for your lift springs (craigslist). You will also want to trade steering correction for stock steering equipment. Most 4"-6" lifts use a raised steering arm, which isnt all that difficult to swap with some help from a big hammer.. Drivelines are more than likely stock and brake lines will be extended, but if you ziptie the extra slack to the shock, it will be just fine.

Just because it is lifted doesn't always mean it is any more difficult to drive. My Suburban has a 4 inch BDS lift and it drives very much like stock. My wife drives it every day;)

my 91 burb and my 79 3/4 ton bolth only had 4" suspention lifts and actually rode out and drove nicer than they did with the stock springs
