5 Lug rear end swap

hey guys, Im looking what the easiest / easily available swap . I already swapped the front drum for 5 lug disc brake . Now as far as the rear end goes, would swapping axles be the easy way ? Or just swapping coplete rear end ? I found a local rear end with 3.73 gears / Posi / 5 lug for $450 . Anybody know of a place in so cal that have these rear ends a bit cheaper ?

EDIT TO ADD

I have a 68 SWB 6 lug C/10

If the 3.73 gears is what you want, I'd swap the rear end. I did it on Old Yeller and it's no big deal. If you pull the axles there's a lot more work to do. $450 probably isn't too bad for a rear end with a posi and 3.73s. It depends on what brand posi and how much abuse it's seen.

Yeah thats true, although at the moment im just looking at the cheapest possible way to some 5x5 lugs on the rear of this truck to mount some American Racing Hopters I have . I always assumed that used rear ends where in the $150-200 range :waah:

Well if it was an open rear end with 3.07-3.43 gears, then yeah $150-200 would be right. The 3.73 gears and posi are what adds to the price. If you don't want the extras keep looking and you'll find what you want in your price range.

450 isn't bad for a complete 5x5 rear end with posi. Keep in mind the rearend you are looking for is only a 2 year production. I paid 300 for the one that I used on the suburban when I went from 8 lug to 5.

Depending on where in SoCal you are, there's a good rear end place in the valley called Hoopers.

Re: 5 Lug rear end swap

I just sold a 71 5 lug coil for $250 in norcal. It was plain 3.07 non posi and it sold fast. I think the value of these rear ends are going up because they are hard to find.

Is the one with posi for $450.00 off of the 71' in the junk yard you found? I responded to the PM you sent me. Give me a call, I left my cell number.
