inner tie rod compatibility?

what i have: 70 c20 with 82 c20 spindles.

ok here is my dilemma. i bought outer tie rod ends for the 82 spindles. the threads are larger on the new tie rod. i was wondering if inner 82 tie rods will fit into the ?drag link? (the rod that is in the center) so i can use 82 tie rod sleeves.

thanks in advance.

Re: inner tie rod compatibility?

Check the thread direction on the two tie rods.
One needs to be left hand and one needs to be right hand.
I believe what you have will be the same "thread direction".

www.performanceonline.com sells a tie rod adapter that will connect the '82 outer to you old stuff,... but you have to use '67-'70 "outer" tie rods (as inners) with your '82 outer tie rods.
Your 82 outer should be 11/16" diameter and your '70 stuff will be 5/8".
Hope this helps.

This is the same thing I did on my '69. The adapter sleeves and using the '70 and earlier outers as inners is the only way to fix it. It's a piece of cake once you buy the sleeves. I got mine from CPP.

When they went to disc brakes starting in '71 they made the tie rods bigger and reversed the thread direction.

Is this a new build (like a disc brake conversion), or are you wanting to replace existing parts which fit properly?

Thanks guys, just used all this info to order this part for my truck. I tried mixing and matching parts to get my truck on the road. I have a 1966 C10, I used '82 Spindles and brakes. Been driving it for about 8 months. But the steering is always giving me problems. Hope this works!!

bumping this instead of making a new thread. i also ordered a proportional valve. ive been told mixed things about the master cylinder. will i need to get a different one? its a 70 c20 with 82 discs up front

Re: inner tie rod compatibility?

Get a 71-72 master cylinder and proportioning valve,... Or do like I did and buy a m/c prop valve combo from performance online.
