need help- spindle removal- darn its kill me!!!

I am trying to remove the spindle on the long side of a front dana 44 open knucle axle. The short side popped off after I removed the dust shield and rotor but the long side is killing me. I removed the rotor and dust sheild but can't get the spindle off. Last time I couldn't get something off it turned out the ujoints have a ring on the inside as I was told by a member so instead of beating the heck out of the hub I thought I would ask advice first. I can't imagine rust holding something that tight. So is there any trick to getting that darn spindle off?
As always, any help would be highly apprecated!

Don

I think you can rent a spindle puller at autozone, that will make life so much easier! This came up the other day in a thread: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=423940

You mean the one that the GM manual says to gently tap and it will come off? Ha!
I spent hours trying to get mine off without success.

Go to the parts store and borrow the slide hammer and adapter made for removing it.

I had my kid hold a 2X4 on top of the spindle while I hit it with a 20lb sledge. Once I got a gap, i use screw drivers to pry.

if you dont have a slide hammer, you can use a 6-8 ft chain. use two lug nuts across from each other to hold the chain on... leave a little slack in the chain and tug on it repeatedly.... flipping the slack up and down... or hook up to the lawnmower and take off... Make sure you have it on some solid jack stands though!!!

if you can front the deposit money, a slide hammer makes it easy though - the rental is pretty cheap... the deposit hurts... but its only temporary...

Re: need help- spindle removal- darn its kill me!!!

Guys, when I tell you a beat, pryed and cursed at that darn spindle for 3 hours last night and finally gave up. Taking the direction from 72lb4x4 I picked up a slide hammer and the spindle attachment from AutoZone. 4 hard slides and the spindle was off! Who would have thought that slide would have enough force to get it off after I had beat the heck out of it for 3 hours. Another lesson learned. Use the right tool. So AGAIN thanks for the help. Now i have to replace the axle ujoints (we all know how fun that is) and start the assemble.
THANKS AGAIN!!
Don
