'88 350 questions
 

I have a 68 chevy stepside with an inline six that i am planning to swap out for a 350. i found one out of a '88 1500 which is what i want becuase it has a serpentine belt. i want to convert the 350 to carb, what else do i need to do besides changing the distributor and the intake manifold? will motor mounts from the 72 chevy c10 bolt up or will there be modification required? what will i need to have functioning power steering? will 72 chevy c10 parts work for that? would i be able to swap the pulley for the 72 p/s pump to work with the sepentine belt?? later on down the line i want to build this 350 to a 383 and i want to know what transmission would be better to go with, a 700R or the Turbo 400 and what year/ what vehicle do you guys recommend for the transmission. also will the stock rear diff be ok to use or should i replace that also?? if so out of what year/what vehicle? The motor mounts will bolt up from the 72 no mods. For the power steering pulley will not work but you could use the pump from the 88 and the line fitting for that pump use some high pressure hose and good clamps on your 72 lines.

All that is necessary to convert to carb is the carb and manifold. The engine will bolt right into place using small block towers and mounts from a 67-72 truck. What tranny do you have now? If you have a 4 speed now, when you convert it to auto you will have to get rid of the crossmember that the bellhousing sits on now and get an auto tranny crossmember. If you have auto then you will just have to move your crossmember some. I'm not sure on what is needed if you currently have 3 OTT. If your going to the trouble of a tranny swap I would suggest going for the OD, either 700r4 or 200r4. The rear end you have now will be fine, no need to swap it unless you are wanting different ratio or something. There is one small thing some are forgetting about when converting to carb, and that is the fact that an 88' block may not have the boss for a mechanical fuel pump. You may need to install a low pressure electric fuel pump to complete the conversion.

Sorry, I can't help you there. I've never messed with autos that much, I try to stick with manuals. I'm sure someone else will chime in though.
