please help! front rotor removal 85' k-20
hey all,
pretty new to this place hoping someone can help me out here. ive never done a brake job on a 4x4 front axle like this and im kinda stuck. ive removed the warn hub-lock cover and took off the c clip which fits into the grove in the spline. on that spline is a bunch of crap i am unfamiliar with but it has roughly half an inch of foward-rearward movement. i know it needs to come off but i cannot see any other c clips or locking devices to remove. can someone point me in the right direction here? i know i should have a service manual and i will try to buy one asap but for right now the trucks down and id really appreciate some help from someone who knows what there doing. 25 degrees and windy is no time to sit there and try to tinker hahaha. thanks in advance to anyone who can help a fella out. if anyones interested il try to get a pic or 2 of the rig up on here. |

Did you take the clip out of the outside of the housing? Its kinda easy to miss.

Re: please help! front rotor removal 85' k-20
awsome thank you both thats exactly what i needed,
the outer ring i did see but was afraid to damage it if it wasn't necessary to touch it pardon newb question numero 2 but do the hubs have to be in locked postion? |
Re: please help! front rotor removal 85' k-20
That I don't remember for sure but I don't think it matters.

Re: please help! front rotor removal 85' k-20
i was able to work on the truck today and the job went smoothly, thank you again for the help.
my only other question concerns re- tightening the axle nuts. i believe the old rotors to be the originals and i dont not believe anyone has been inside the hubs before, (76k mile truck) when removing the nuts they were literally hand loose... as in i took em off turning the socket with my fingers; not a wrench. i actually read there was some sort of recall on certain trucks about the factory messing this process up, does anyone know anything about that? how tight should i make these? |
Re: please help! front rotor removal 85' k-20
i havent heard of the recall, but i always make it tight as balls lol i like to know i can trust it and not have the wheels come off when im driving down the highway. if you want to know the proper tightness you should be able to look that up in a service manual or someone else may chime in

Re: please help! front rotor removal 85' k-20
I was in the same spot as you with my 85 K20 about 4 months ago...there is a specific torque sequence....let me check my manual I used...make sure you have one of those spanner nut sockets....back soon...

Re: please help! front rotor removal 85' k-20
Ok Here you go...just to confirm that you are asking about putting the manual locking hubs with rotors back on a 84-87 K20...here's what my service manual says about tightening the axle nut (spanner nuts) back on the axle...make sure you have repacked the bearings with grease... While rotating the wheel/rotor, use the spanner socket on a torque wrench to torque the nut to 50 ft lbs....then back the nut off 90 degrees or 1/4 turn..while slowly turning the wheel/rotor retighten the nut to 35 ft lbs...then back it off 3/8ths of a turn...final step is putting on the lock nut against the spanner nut...you will either have a cotter pin or merely make sure the lock nut is very tight to keep the spanner from backing out. Good luck. I give you lots of credit for tackling this in the cold whether...
