Tilt Column Shifting Linkage Question
Hey Gang,
I put a 71 Chevy Suburban Tilt Column in my 72 truck today. There are several things different between tilt and non tilt. I noticed that where shifting linkage attached to the column lever on the tilt is curved where the non tilt is straight. After the install I cannot get my truck to shift manually through P to 1. I searched the forums and found numerous articles about tilt columns but nothing mentioned about shift linkage adjustments. What do I need to do to get right. Are the linkages for tilt and non tilt the same? Thanks in advance. |
Re: Tilt Column Shifting Linkage Question
Linkage should be the same, adjustment is accomplished through the bolt/clamp that holds the linkage to the column arm. Put the truck in park loosen the 9/16 nut and release the clamp. Climb underneath and put the trans in park if not already and tighten clamp. Pull through range if still not in low put shifter in low position and pull trans side arm into low tighten nut and should be good. If I remember correctly the curved linkage rod is for th400 and straight is for th350

Re: Tilt Column Shifting Linkage Question
Also check the bushings in the linkage. Some new ones will tighten it up a bit and may be enough to get that low gear engagement.

Re: Tilt Column Shifting Linkage Question
look at the linkage, is it bent towards the front of the truck? If so, just bend it back, whomever removed it from the donor vehicle goy ipatiet and bent it when the pulled it through the floorboard.
