serious carb problem/ gas leak into intake
 

I took the carb off my truck and rebuilt it. Last night I was putting it back on, reattached my fuel line and just set the carb back on the manifold. I didn't reattach my choke or throttle linkage though. After i got off work I saw a puddle of gas under my truck and popped the hood to find gas had run through the carb and my entire intake was full of gas. It had obviously run through the engine bc it was dripping out of a bad spot in my exhaust. So with gas all the way through my engine, how bad is my situation and what am I looking at to fix this? Also, what is causing the gas to still be coming through my fuel line without anything to pump it? This new guy needs some help lol

Shouldn t be any damage just change the oil. not sure why it would do that tho

Weird for sure... Could be a float. I had the same thing happen in my Chevelle but it hapenned when I was trying to start it and it flooded baaaad. There was a hole in the float so it just kept pouring gas into the engine.

Drain the oil. Pull the plugs. Turn it over a few times with the plugs out to get all the fuel out of the cylinders. Install new plugs (you might be OK with the old ones depending on how they look). Fill it back up with oil and try again.

It's a PITA but if you don't get all the fuel and contaminated oil out you cause serious damage to your engine. A hydraulic lock can bend a rod which will cost you a lot more that some oil and a set of plugs.

Alright, thanks. I was really freaking out. What baffles me is why would the fuel be coming up through the fuel line w nothing pumping it? Before I took the carb off I always had to pump the gas 5 or 6 times to get it up to the carb and when I had the carb off it started pumping through the fuel line, but not until the next afternoon, for no reason. That and the fact that it ran straight through my carb the way it did, but I guess that has to be the float.

That has to be what it is. It only happened in the afternoon when it warmed up the last 2 days. Feel pretty dumb but I'm learning. I needed to change the oil and put fresh plugs in too. Thanks for all the help.

cdowns may be on to something here. If you are having cool nights and warm days the fuel may be expanding in the tank and forcing it through the fuel system. Especially if it had the wrong gas cap on it or if the vent hole in the cap is plugged.

If you just rebuilt your carb, you probably have your float set wrong and the bowls are over filling and draining into the intake. Also when the temp outside is coming up in the afternoon you are building enough pressure in the tank to push fuel through the carb and a siphon gets going and doesn't want to stop till you run out of fuel.

Also, if you got that much fuel in your motor, I would recommend draining the oil, putting in new, reprimming everything, running it for a few minutes and changing the oil again. Simply because if you put that much fuel in there you've probably washed everything down. Meaning all the oil is gone from the rings in the cylinders, the cam will dry ect, ect. I know it's a pain in the ars but it's a good piece of mind.

It would really suck to loose a lobe on you cam or something for lack of lube.

Already helping folks out w the first post Haha thanks. I picked up all of the supplies after class and im about to get to work on it. Hopefully I get it all figured out today

When you turn it over with the plugs removed, make sure to remove the coil wire or power to the distributor. An engine fire will ruin your day. ;)

I'm not convinced you set your float correctly or you have a needle and seat not closing properly and the pressure from a non vented cap. The float level set properly will not allow any more gas to enter the carb, so if it didn't close the pressure from the tank could push the fuel into the carb then into the intake.

Big plus on pulling the plugs and taking the power off the coil and tapeing the wire up so it won't spark anywhere if it touches metal before turning the engine over to make sure the gas is cleared out. Then change the oil.
