Something funny happened yesterday...

So I just dropped a 350 that I built into my '67 and got it to a point where I was able to drive it. It's still open headers with a thumpr cam. Loud as all get out needless to say. So my dad comes out and wants to go for a ride. As soon as we take off, he wishes that he had brought along some earplugs. lol. We went down the road a little way and turned around. (I live in the country, so it's not like there's any form of noise control out here.) As we're going back to the house, he points to the dash. (I couldn't hear him over the truck anyway.) I immediately start checking my oil pressure and temp gauges. Nothing's wrong. I look back at him and he just points to the dash again. When I looked the second time, I saw what he was trying to tell me. The gas gauge needle fell off! Never had that happen before. I must have not pressed it on hard enough when I had it off to paint it. And I just thought my sending unit was bad. No wonder it read 4 inches past empty. Just something else to add to the "need to fix" list.:waah:

This summer i plan on driving around with open headers for a little while after i get done because i dont want to wait for the exhaust to be finished:lol:. What kind of headers are you using?

 Man, you must be using some high octane fuel to blow the needle off!

i think a gearhead should have the legal right to do one cruise after an engine swap with open headers and no hood. A short burn out in a safe place should be part of it too.

Ha ha LHM. I've accomplished all 3 of them. I drive around my house on a dirt road that turns into a paved road. I got the tires spinning pretty good on the dirt and just hammered it when I hit the pavement. It certainly spins up those 3.08's better than the wimpy 6 cylinder I pulled. Left a nice long streak. :metal: As for the headers I'm using, they're ceramic coated from Summit Racing. You can't beat ceramic coated. Within 10-15 min of shutting off the engine you can hold your hand on them. Plus, they won't rust out. The only bad thing about them is during the coating process, they slopped on a little excess coating on the flanges. Couple minutes with the sander and they sealed up nice and tight. No leaks. I'm using manifold gaskets with them too. They seem to work the best. As for running around with open headers, sure it's neat for about the first 30 seconds after you crank it up. But when you drive it around it'll darn near rattle the teeth outta your skull!
