Maxxis Bighorn?
 

Anybody use these tires? What are they like? Any problems? Any info asap would be greatly appreciated. I'm looking to trade my 35" mud grapplers for a set of 285/75/16 Maxxis bighorns. I want smaller tires for my truck when I lower it and don't want such an aggresive tread anymore.

I like mine!! not sure how long they last, think mine are big horn 2.0

I had 265/75/16 big horns on a work truck a couple of years ago. They ride fine, did great in slick mud and aren't too loud. They didn't wear great, in my opinion. Probably 60% gone in less than a year and 20,000 miles. Lots of highway / high speed driving though, which isn't the best for tires with large tread blocks...

i had a set of them they are not too bad concidering what kind of tire they are. are you just off roading, or are they gonna be on the street? i had mine on the street, they were alright, but the maxxis buckshots are alot better in my opinion, if you keep them rotated you'll see 45- 50k out of them (i have at least). hope this helps.

My truck was built to be a mud truck, but I've been slowly making it a more road worthy DD that can do some offroading to get to the camp. The Nittos I have now are way to loud, I can feel them in the steering wheel. My Nittos wear fast too, but I don't have the money to buy new tires with good tread life right now and need to lower my truck, and seeing as how the nittos will wear just as fast as the bighorns, I'm more concerned about the durability of the maxxis tires. I just want them to last till next summer when I'm in a better financial state.

I've got a set of those too but I don't think that's the type of Bighorns he was asking about.:lol:

Nice color choice!! I realized after others responded,that this is a full size tire question. I didnt even know maxis made DOT tires.

Yea they are an alright tire. They do good on road and decent for mild off road use. I have never ran them personally. Just now a few people who have had them on there trucks with no major complaints or flaws that I know of lol!

A couple guys on the crew ran them on their work trucks for logging so the rigs are weighted down pretty heavy. One rig is a '09 Ford 1 ton standard cab longy with 100 gal slip tank and atleast 500+ lbs additional tools and overload bags. They tried the Maxxis as a cheaper substitute to Toyo's M55 and Toyo's Open Country mud tire. The Maxxis don't last as long but the side walls seem to hold out in the sticks. Ultimately for this app the guys still like the Toyo's better for longevity and wear for the price. In lighter apps for mud a few others I know run them but once again it was only because the Maxxis was a cheaper option. I think they are a fine "middle of the road" tire for what sounds like you want to use them for.

Aren't they just Buckshot Mudders renamed? They are about the only 255/85s available besides BFG M/Ts.

I guess I don't know about the rename, but the 255/85 R16 is a common size that I find in most LT traction tires. I like that size.

i agree i like my buckshots alot better than the bighorns i had but as i think about it i didnt take as good of care of the bighorns (rotate, ballance every 5k) but i thought they cupped more than i like to see. i ran them on a 99 dodge with a cummins daily driver so both tires seen alot of pavement but for a "mud tire" both sets held up nicley. but i am in love with the buckshots

I guess I had it mixed up. It's more like you can't get the tall skinny Buckshots anymore so you have to get Bighorns. It's like they took their place when it comes to tall skinnies. I always knew Buckshot Mudders for their Q78s.
I was running 255/85s on my '92 and could only find BFG M/Ts around here. I don't like BFGs on a heavy work truck,so I went with 285/75s. I got some kind of Uniroyals that are are all season but more aggressive like A/Ts. I think they are Laredo AWTs (truck's not here right now). I've had them on there for a good while and they are wearing really well. Price was pretty decent,too.

BTW...what's the reason tires took such a huge jump in price,anyway? I bought these tires in '08 and hadn't looked at tires since. Then,last year I started looking for a set for my '85 Jimmy. WTF?? Prices took a huge jump! I've been buying off road tires for about 35 years and have stayed familiar with the prices and never saw such a jump. I have a set of 12.50/37 SSRs to put on my '72. I got them barely used for $1,000 and they were around $1,200 new just a couple years ago. Now they are over $1,600 at the cheapest places (NTW). They went up $100 a tire. Now 285/75s are over $1,000 a set :crazy:

I know what you mean Special-K, I just priced Toyo Open Country M/T's for my Superduty. 35"x12.5"/18" = $378.00 a tire. Outrageous!!! I remember it to be just the American made Goodyears were overpriced. Now it seems like the goodyears are on the low end.

Well, the guy I was talking to about the Maxxis tires never got back to me, and someone else got back to me with Pro Comp Mud Terrains, so I went with them. I'm get the Pro comps and some cash for my Nittos. As much as I like the Nitto's and 6" lift, gas prices and daily use means I need a lower truck. But, fear not in a few years when I'm done working on the house, the garage is built, and I get a new DD I'm going to lift the truck back up 8" on 36-37's and probably a frame off resto.

Well, the pro comps were a bust, the guy said they were 80%, they were barely 50% and rotting on the inside. So I'm still looking, but I also need to find something wider then a 285 or get new rims. My rims are 16x12, so the 285's or 11.5's are just too narrow.

Oh yeah,the 12" rims do make a difference in choices. I guess you're looking for 12.50/33s. They are pretty common. Good luck on your search.
