Which years of Chevy trucks will power steering gear and pumps will work in my 68?

Hi everybody,

I have read the threads on the change to power steering and am heading to the junkyard today. (I had no idea that I actually have to change my steering gear as well but I oh well.) What years will work if I am not concerned about being period correct.

Thanks!

I have a 71 truck that originally had a 350 in it with power steering. When we put the '73 454 in it we used the power steering pump from the '73. It works great.

I know the 68 4wd frame won't take just any steering box my frame had to be modified to take the donor box

If you have a '68 the only hang-up is your frame MAY have to be "dinged in" behind a power steering box. As to year, anything up to 1988 off a c10 2wd will work, but it is easier if you get the "whole shootin' match," that is pump, brackets, hoses, crank pulley, and box from the same donor truck. Others may work, too. Some time in the late '70s Chevy switched to metric hose fittings, so be aware of that. Get the clamp/s off the frame that hold the lines, too. Don't forget the belt!

It takes longer at the junkyard to pull the stuff than it does to put it back on your truck. Be sure to write down the model year in case you ever need hoses.

This and power brakes are the best mods I have done on my truck!

have fun,

Les

so I called the junk yards and they have no complete trucks to do that with. I think I will just LMC it. Get the steering gear, the pump, the pitman arm, brackets, pulley etc.. Thanks again!

or you could get it all at autozone and get it with a warranty

+1 or NAPA....
no need for LMC and crazy shipping prices for this type of stuff...
It WILL save you money if you can come up with a core to trade in... (prob about $100 core charge!)

Check a few other places. Anyone can afford to save several hundred dollars. I paid about $75 for the stuff I just recently got for a friends '74 truck and it's exactly the same as what you need, but it came off three different trucks at the same yard. 30 day warranty. All you have to know is that the parts come off a 1/2 ton and the hoses fit on both ends! O'Reilly's and Auto Zone are way cheaper, (NAPA too?) than LMC will ever be, and try to send it back if it's wrong! Look for a locally owned store, too. They count on you for business and you can count on them for parts (usually.) I've probably done a dozen of these conversions and I always use a new pitman arm. I forgot to mention that before. YOU CAN DO IT!

That is great advice, I will give it a shot, I just am trying to see what a complete system looks like. LMC has a good diagram but still....anyway, the neighbor next door has a 71 GMC, ac, power steering, just rotting away. Made him an offer but no go. If I were to do the auto zone thing then what year of pump would I ask for? (I like the 20 dollars back for every 100 I spend there.) And about the steering gear, the yard has a 75 for 25 bucks, should I get that and just put a new pitman arm on it or buy a whole new steering gear?
