I'm a Dumba@# help me or tell me if I'm screwed?
My tranny turbo 350 had a slow leak I added some trans fluid to it last night and a bottle of gunk trans sealer to help.
Well I was driving down the highway just a while ago on my way to work and noticed smoke coming out the back of my truck I pull off the highway and looked under my truck and I had transmission fluid all over my tailpipes and everything else. The DumbA@# part Then I realised I didn't check my fluid after I added the 2 quarts and the gunk crap. I think I over filled it I checked the fluid when I was off the highway and it was reading full so I went to work which was only about 5 miles away So what did I screw up so my wife can chew my a@# out when I ask for the check book |
When a trans is over full it will leak out the excess fluid, and if it hits the hot tailpipes, instant white smoke. So you may not have ruined anything, and the fresh "undercoating" will prevent rust. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/board/ubbhtml/smile.gif
Keep checking the level though! Is the tranny still operating normal? ------------------

Time to chainge your fluid.
Wile Frank is right about being low = real bad stuff...being over full causes areation (foam) and then the clutch packs don't get the coolant/lube they need. Also exsesive abounts can blow a seal. You need to drain off the excess ASAP. ------------------ '69 G.M.C. 350/350. sounds like you already blew your selas oput, kinda late now.. front pump seal is probably gone i bet ya

Yeah. Trannys aren't supposed to leak, period. They're a hydrolic system that's pressurized. Therefore, if you add too much fluid it will make your leaks worse, because the system will force it out any way it can. Usually it breaks the front or rear seal, but sometimes it breaks the pan gasket. Rarely it will force its way out of the governor, the modulator (blow the baffle), or the cooling lines (which would be BAD). That's how some people end up with coolant in their trannies, and ATF in their radiators.
Overfilling can sometimes be just as bad as underfilling. As longhornmail told you it could cause clutch damage as well. You could end up varnishing your friction plates just as if you ran it low on fluid! Pull that thing and do a seal job. Put it in, and test-drive it for a few days. Get those leaks stopped, and pay attention to the shifting. I would rather do a seal job than use that Gunk crap, and continue worrying about leaks. ------------------ '69 3/4 ton C20 2wd w/ 350ci/400THM and a wood bed! I blew the front seal on my tranny, it pours out and you can't drive it. And the place I had do my tranny work said a trans will leak if the trans is over full.
Probably best to take it to a transmission shop and have it looked at. It could be fine. ------------------

After further testing the fluid only comes out when it kicks into passing gear when I get home today I'm going to drain the excess fluid run it and see what happens I'm crossing my fingers.
One more thing I powerwashed the tranny off yesterday so I would have a clean surface to look at drove it around at low speeds no leaks so that is when I drove it faster and checked it no leaks so I punched it at about 55 mph so it would drop down a gear and that is when it sprayed fluid and it didn't spray from the front or rear seal.I did all this with the fluid level high. |

And I told him that it hurts when I do this and he said to stop doing it !

line pressures are much higher when you kick into passing gear. you need to fix the seal or wherever its leaking from or you can kiss that transmission goodbye. driving it more is a bad idea. it aint broke yet if the fluid isnt cooked so fix it before you drive it and blow all the fluid out on the road and smoke the tranny.there are NO miracles in a bottle. that crap is a bandaid at best. if that stuff worked there would be a lot of tranny guys out of work
