Door Panel Time

With temperatures moderating back to comfortably hot outside recently I decided it was time to move forward on this project. I've had the new door inserts to match the one I changed when I redid the dash laying around since last winter.:uhmk:

Anyway, picked up some SEM product in black last Saturday for this project so will see what it looks like when it's done. But for now, got the door panels off today.

After a lot of scrubbing they are now drying...paint to follow a thorough drying...

Having never painted interior panels before this will be interesting. Yet having read and seen others results here it helps to know it can be done.

And for anyone who wants to see the other parts involved for what it may be worth:

Well time to check on the panels and set up an area for paint soon. Not sure what to do about the lower brown carpet panels.

Leaning to just eliminating those altogether and painting that part of the door black as well. Doubt painting carpet would work out very well. Maybe a diamond plate panel in the future? Curious to see how the black door panels will go with the rest of the tan interior...hopefully a decent two-tone result. :smoke:

You can get reproduction door bottom carpet...in black too. If you just eliminate them, you will have exposed screw holes to look at.

Re: Door Panel Time

I'm really impressed with SEM. I know I am the worst spray bomb painter and this paint obviously took me in account!:lol

Seriously, nice product, quick dry time between coats and my fear of messing this project up is over as I tend to stay away from anything involving a spray can and a vehicle.

Even painting the lower door idea is coming along with one "minor" glitch. Nothing like discovering something new on something old.

So I reread the label on the SEM can and it says it adheres to carpet too.

Still, the drivers side came out like I planned.

Unfortunately I hadn't pulled the carpet off the passenger side at that point.

At least the door panels turned out better than I expected considering 25 years of scars and scratches. I did lightly run some emery cloth and #000steel wool over the worst areas and it seemed to help.

Oh well, it is a working truck and not a show queen...and the end result will be a lot better than what I had. ;)

Waiting on paint to dry on the doors now as I ponder using SEM on carpet panels.

Decided to just take this project through until done...so here it is now in pictures...now done as far as I am concerned. Remember, this truck is for working and as much as I would like it to be a garage queen...at best, it will always be a solid looker but a practical working truck nonetheless. This truck has actually been a money-maker...which is why it gets to be spoiled on such a project as this.

Anyway, a lot of breaks in-between life and stuff today, but timed the paint and re-assembly process to see this project done over a 14 hr period. It has been on my list of things to do since spring and glad to see it done!:metal:

Not too bad considering I hate spray bombs.

And finally the gauge cluster, (a past project), looked good tonight...so a final pic.

Wondering what the next project will be on "this old truck"...cowl hood, engine, brakes, body, more cosmetics???...the list on these old trucks is always endless! Yet since a new one is nearer 50k. I think I'll hang on to the old..
