Junkyard Question
 

Does anyone know if Pull A Part locations will let you take a wagon in to haul tools in and parts back out.Ive only been once and they had wheelbarrows for loan but they were all taken. I plan to take a boy from a local foster home with me there soon and would like to be prepared.

All the ones I go to allow it. Make sure you check out the age requirements for admission....the yards here specify that you must be 18 to enter, preventing me from taking my boys :(

Yeah, there's an age limitation due to insurance and legal reasons. Young ones tend to be curious and don't always stay in one place and while your busy removing a part they can get hurt doing something else.

If you want to get these boys interested in mechanics just have them do little things to help you at home like handing you tools and explaining what they're for. Just remember that their attention span is extremely short and even more so now with all the fast paced technology their exposed to.

I usually bring my garden wagon that has 4 inflated tires and carries 1000 lbs :) It handles the gravel rather nicely.

They will not have a problem with a wagon.......the kid will not fly though.

Hell, I grew up in a junkyard. Every Sat when I was younger my gramps would drag me to the local yards that his friends owned.. spent many hours hanging around them.

Not sure about now. That was in the late 70s, early 80s.

And the cars and trucks were stacked on top of each other, like a jungle gym!
Yards are much safer and cleaner now....its too bad, had a lot of good times hunting parts and old vehicles.

I have used children's wagons, hand trucks, and I just found a baby stroller on the curb that I intend to use to haul tools in/ haul items out next time I go to Crazy Ray's.

Thanks guys for the fast responses ,as for his age he is 18 so that should not be a problem .He is legally an adult but he is still very young, but he is chomping at the bit to go junkyarding with me as I am with him. It will be a great time to get to know him better and he loves working on stuff so it should be fun.

All of mine are grown and gone and nephews are not interested so I have to usually go it alone to the salvage yards. It's nice to have someone else that likes to do that go with you.

Here is my Baby Stroller Tool Cart...found it at the curb too.

Insurance requirements ruined the kids thing, too bad, it was a magical place to be when I was a kid. Always wanted to own one, couldn't afford to so now I am turning my yard into one. :lol:

In your part of the world I'd take a stick, a can of wasp spray, and some bug repellent too. My boy and I used to come back from bone yard searches just loaded with chigger bites and the occasional scare from critters and snakes.

The Home Depot wagon youre talking about is exactly what I had in mind to take ,I have 2 of them I use for firewood .I cant wait to go parts hunting and I really dont need anything.

I saw a guy at a local yard with one of those pull golf bag cart things. He had put some small ( like maybe 10") bicycle wheels on it , said the originals were kind of bouncy and rough being solid rubber, and had a some plywood ( about 16" x48" ) where the golf bag used to sit with a hinged flap on the bottom. On the flap he had a bucket with one of those pouch things to keep his tools in and put small parts. He'd drilled a few holes in the wood so he could Strap his tool bucket and/or tie parts to it. You couldn't haul a tranny on it or anything heavy like that, those carts are pretty light guage aluminum construction. Probably handle a fender though, . He said he had hauled a bench seat in 2 trips ( it was too tippy in one piece, this yard is badly rutted ). It was light, quite stable and all folded up to fit in the trunk of his car. Looked like it worked better than the beat up wheel barrows with flat tires the yard had for use. Pretty freekin clever actually.
