6 lug rotors ?
 

My spindle from CPP calls for 71-87 .. 1 1/4" rotors....

Did these come in C 10 6 lug after 71? I can't seem to find them.

I thought I could save money and buy them local from NAPA

I guess I might have to get the ones from CPP

Any help would be great.

It looks like the 4x4's had them but the spindle must be way different on a 4x4

Yeh i have a 86 k10 too. The 4wd is wayyyy diff than the 2wd

GM never made disc brakes for 2WD standard until '71. At that time, the change was made to go to 5-lug...5 on 5, as they say. The 6-lug pattern disc rotor for 2WD, is an aftermarket thing. Mine are from ECE. I kept the 6-lug pattern because my truck still had the 6-lug rear axles. I can get the 71-up 5-lug rotors and carry 2 spares, but why?

So, you won't find anyone at AutoZone (for instance) who will be able to find a 2WD 6-lug rotor for your truck, unless they happen to be savvy about these trucks and know who has what you want.

Ouch that is what I was afraid of. The customer service at CPP was terrible so I wanted to get just the spindle....now I will have to get the rotors shipped. I guess the calipars will be a custom make too....?

Should of saved up for the whole kit I guess.

I want 6 lug also because it was stock and my rear axle is oem posi 6 lug

What are my options?

I wonder if you can use another vendors rotor, calipers, bearing kit, with CPP spindles??

i believe as long as you get 1.25" rotors (keep in mind 1.0" are available) you should be compatible with CPP. But, if it were me, I'd just go ahead and get them from CPP - that way you KNOW what you're getting, and if problems arise - return to ONE vendor for help. If you mix/match, the vendor will always (sometimes rightfully so) blame the "combo" you bought yourself - i.e. the other vendor's part. Vendor perspective: the enthusiast's inability to mix/match the right parts is not necessarily the vendor's fault.

Folks above are correct - 6 lug in K10 only from 71 and up. 72 was first year disk brakes were standard (71 was option only - thus the "Disk Brakes" sticker on the tailgate of a 71 vice 72)

So, switiching to 71-87 ball joints, calipers, etc etc is all good and parts are more plentiful/less expensive, BUT, to retain 6 lug, you have to buy from a specialty mfgr, like CPP, ECE, GMC Paul's, etc etc. Their rotors are essentially identical to 5 lug 1.25" rotors except with 6 lugs - allowing all the other stuff to be interchangeable. But, you are essentially locked into buying aftermarket rotors for life. If you transition to 5 lug, you can go to Autozone or anywhere to get replacements - but me, I'd stick with 6 lug also and just accept the fact that I will need to rotors (only) from an aftermarket source.

Right on Jocko.. they say there are guaranteed for life so that should be all good.

The 88-98 Light Duty 2500 2wd has 6 lug rotors not sure of the size though.

I installed ECE 6 lug rotors on 71 spindles with stock calipers/parts. If I remember right, the ECE rotors were designed to be exactly like the 5 luggers, but with 6. CPP should be the same?

I believe that is the case. Retro fit of 71-87 stuff onto 70 and earlier is a popular upgrade - parts more plentiful, better design in some cases than the earlier stuff, etc etc. For this reason, vendors design compatability around the 71 and up stuff. Some DO offer compatability with older stuff - for instance, I can buy 6 lug rotors for my truck that are compatible with my older spindles, but the more popular upgrade is to get 71 and up spindles and then the 71 and up rotors from a vendor (with 6 lug - if you want to retain 6 lug). Having said all that, I still have my little 4 wheel drummies and stock spindles. I'm behind the power curve I guess...

And it is cheaper then the manufactuer...how that is possible, I don't know. CPP is $351 plus $109 to ship it!!

Was going to get just the rotor and find the caliper and stuff at NAPA, but want this done with soon. Kit has everything you need except the spindle.

I bought bags thinking pop them in and be done with it!

But with bags and stock spindle to get the front to sit right(wheel to fender gap) you have to have zero air in the bags..which is no good.

So on came the drop spindles.........

And the 18" rims and tires......

Then came the disc brake conversion.............

Temped to sell the spindles, bags, and rims and tires and go back all stock.....but what fun and waste of money would that be :)

I have always wanted to explore an option pertaining to your question asked in the very first post. This hands on economy-conversion-build it option would be pending if your new spindles are dimensionally consistent with a factory OE 71/72 disc spindle when it comes to mounting the 1.25" rotor as far as bore depth, bearings & races. The option I have wanted to look into would be using an over the counter easily obtainable from any parts house rotor, an example of my choice would be picking up a Napa #4885537 1/2 ton 5 lug 1.25 standard rotor @ $30.25 ea. or even the step up high performance Napa #PR85537L drilled & slotted version @ $101.15 ea. and then take it to your local axle/machine shop to see if the bolt pattern could be changed from 5 on 5 inch to the 6 on 5.5 inch pattern. Process would be just the opposite of these pictured factory 6 lug 12 bolt rear axles that I had a local machine shop repattern to 5 lug which then allowed me to use this 68 C/10's original narrow housing 12 bolt posi and go to 5 lug now matching the OE 71 front disc conversion swap. I scanned through the posts above but i'm at work so i am going to repeat some stuff but i can't spend a ton of time so........


These rotors are made by mcgaughey if i remember correctly. You can get kits directly from them. I purchased mine from a guy on ebay and if i recall correctly, it was just a mcgaughey kit that was shipped right to me. The standard kit is essentially a stock 73 and up hd(1.25") front disc setup including calipers and pads except the rotor blanks are drilled for 6 lug instead of 5. They are designed to be used with the standard 73 and up hd spindle, but there may be a manufacturer that takes the spindle and reams the balljoint holes so that you can use them with stock 67-72 balljoints, i am not sure.

The other option is to use a 3/4 ton lower a-arm and and 1/2 ton upper with the correct size balljoint and you can use 1988-199? spindle and use the later calipers and get new 6 lug rotors right at the auto store. the cool thing about that is you can use all stock gm replacement parts with it. It is a little more involved that that but i am going to score a setup from the junkyard and have it in case i want to use it later on instead of the '86 setup i have now with the 6-lug discs. There is info on this swap on this site somewhere.

Great idea man...just get the 5 lug rotor re-machined to 6 lug....done.
The CPP rotor is $129 by itself, you could machine the $33 NAPA rotor for half that price. But you would have to trust your machinist very well.

We carry a 6 lug disc kit that works with any of the disc brake conversion spoindles supplied by CPP, ECE, or McGaughys. Its $325.00 for the kit and includes the following parts
6-Lug Front Disc Brake Kit, Includes for both sides all needed Inner&outer wheel bearings, new grease seals, dust caps, 2-Calipers, 2-Brake hoses, Brake Pads, 2-12" 6 Lug Rotors, & spindle nuts. If you need replacement parts the bearings, calipers, brake pads, dust caps, and seals all are the same as the 71-87 1/2 ton 2wd parts so they can be picked up at the local auto parts store. The rotors though are a special item not available at local parts stores.

I have the whole C2500 LD setup on my 69 stepside and thought about the same rotor swap. The wheel bearings are the same inner & outer but I don't know if the spacing is the same as the square body spindle.

They are slightly smaller in diameter and slightly thicker but may be close enough that they still work.

If they worked then replacements are as close as the nearest parts store or even the wrecking yard for some that are turnable.

The down side is the new C2500 LD rotors are just as expensive as the aftermarket 6-lug rotors. They used to be more expensive but they have come down a bunch in price over the past two years. When I first did the swap they were $140 each at AZ now they are down to $80 each.

I may pick up a square body spindle and check out the fit for possible future use.
