Who's got the dirtiest parts?? Let sludge and grime unite!!
Picked this up from a fellow board member and thought this has got to be the dirtiest thing I have ever seen  Well I got to thinking, I bet you all got a tale or some pics of some very dirty parts over the years. Needless to say after some time with a scraper, some degreaser and a trip to the car wash it looks a thousand times better. Let's see what you got...here's what I started with

I thought mine was pretty bad when I was taking it apart, but it seems pretty nice compared to some of those!

Re: Who's got the dirtiest parts?? Let sludge and grime unite!!
The dirtiest and nastiest parts I have ever been invloved with was in the 350 olds diesel cars of the early 1980's. Diesels are bad enought then add in that leaky POS olds on top of it, only saving grace is they did not stay on the road long enough to get any real dirt in the drooling soot filled oil. Sorry no pictures, the last thing I want is mementos of those nightmare days.

My transmission guy told me the dirty transmission are the ones that clean up really good. I dusted this one with aluminum paint but it did not take much.

Re: Who's got the dirtiest parts?? Let sludge and grime unite!!
This reminded me remember back in the 70s anybody that put quaker state motor oil in a car or truck that sludge look was what the INSIDE of your motor looked like I was always amazed to see a motor taken apart and it looked like it was full of black mud lol and you could always ask the owner what kind of oil the were using in it and they would say QUAKER STATE ! Lol I wont put quaker state in a lawn mower to this day because of that !

My original fuel tank pipe and sender from the behind the seat fuel tank. I can't imagine the inside of the tank was much better.

I don't have any pics to share, but I absolutely hate doing brake jobs. I don't know how it happens, but I end up covered in crap from head to toe.

Re: Who's got the dirtiest parts?? Let sludge and grime unite!!
I wish I had pictures of my first car. It was a 65 impala I bought for $25. You almost couldn't see the engine through the grime. I had to use a putty knife just to find the valve cover bolts. When I got the valve covers off, it looked like they were still on. The sludge had hardened and filled the valve covers leaving a perfect imprint of the script "Chevrolet" in the sludge. My dad said clean them out, and then put them back on. Then he filled the entire engine with gasoline. It soaked for about 2hrs, then drained it out into a bucket.
Then used a hair dryer in the fill tube and left it running for about 5 hrs. Filled her up with oil, and down the road she goes. You had to add a qt. of oil for every hundred miles or so for the rest of it's life. These old chevy's don't really die, they're just resting.:metal: |
Re: Who's got the dirtiest parts?? Let sludge and grime unite!!
Some nice pic's here guy's, tranny's are winning for the dirtiest. No pic's here but when I first started as a mechanic years ago the first valve cover I pulled on a ladie's old Caprice was full of sludge right to the top of cover so I asked her about oil changes and she said you change the oil but it had oil in it when I bought the car when it was new.
