Re: Electric Fan

I have a single 16" Spal on my GTO. Replaced a dual 11" Flex-a-lite that didn't cool worth the cardboard box it was shipped in. The Spal keeps my hot running Pontiac 400 at 200 in this Houston heat. It helps that it came with a PRC aluminum radiator and fan shroud built specifically for that fan.

16" on aluminium radiator from Entropy radiator. You can hear them, a little loud.

This link should give you an great idea of the electric fan you should be using.

http://flex-a-lite-blog.com/2010/04/...-electric-fan/

Pretty much say's for a v-8 it should be at least 2500 CFM's, a puller, and cover at least 70% of the radiator. Of course, with more HP the more CFM's you should run.

I definitely would not run to small of a fan set up (whether it is CFM or Coverage). You may cool the engine, but keeping the transmission cool is another story. I was figuring these things out myself after getting my truck together, I put a dual fan setup on mine from the salvage yard, covers about half of the radiator or a little less. Fluid started coming out the dipstick tube of the transmission. Found out my issue after I did the research. Not enough CFM or coverage of the radiator.

Hope this helps.

IMHO those aftermarket fans are a big waste of cash. I would go to your local junkyard and get a fan from a v6 car of at least 16 inch blade dia and you'll have plenty of cooling provided your radiator is up to snuff. Mine is out of a chevy Eurosport v6 and my sbc runs 160 in 95 degree traffic towing my popup camper yet.

I agree with pulling an electric fan setup from the junk yard. You just have to know what you are looking for. The fan set up I have may actually cool it enough, I found out I routed my coolant hoses wrong on my LT1 swap. Lack of research on my part. Going to correct it as soon as I get home, and see how it cools then before I go searching for another electric fan setup.

Thanks on the tip of pulling on from a V6 with a 16in blade. Can you post a picture of it?
