Trying to determine whether a dually or C&C

There is an 88 GMC K30 for sale near me but I want to know whether it was a factory dually or a C&C. The truck currently has a flatbed on it now.

What I want to know if what digit in the VIN will tell me whether is a factory dually or the other. Is it the 5th digit. Also what are the letters that designate it as one or the other.

Re: Trying to determine whether a dually or C&C

I don't know the letter, but look at the wheelbase on the door jamb sticker, that will give you an idea. I have a short cab C&C and it is 161 inches, a reg cab long box dually would be 131 inches. Wheelbase will matter if you intend to remove the flat bed and put on a box. One of the biggest clues is the width of the rear axle WMS to WMS a dually is C&C is 82/3 inches a dually I would guess is 90ish.

Hope this helps, good luck.

I am sure i will get corrected if i am wrong, wms to wms on the c&c rea is 63" and regular dually is 72". If it is a c&c it will be a 14 bolt full floater. Dually will be a Dana 70hd.

I thought it was 63 and 70, I didn't clarify the 82/3 is outside tire to outside tire side wall.

Position 5 will distinguish the program type (ie, C/K = GMT400 vs R/V for the carryover style).

Looks like VIN position number 7 will tell you if it's a Cab/Chassis vs a pickup.

Re: Trying to determine whether a dually or C&C

I got the VIN today. Lets see if this is right.

1. US built
G. General Motors
D. GMC Incomplete
J. 10,001-14000 GVWR
V. Conventianal cab 4x4
3. 1 ton
4. two door cab
J. 6.2L Diesel
7. ?
J. ?
J. Janesville,WI?? Plant.

He gave me some measurements from the back of the cab to the center of the rear axle tube. It measured 71" which is about 14" (give or take) too long to be a factory dually. I was hoping even if it was a C&C that the measurements would be right and I could swap out the rear end and put a wider one in so I could put on a factory dually bed. There was no door tag inside the jam either.

Oh well, I now know that this truck is a C&C and I also learned a little something along the way.
