PCV Question??

Okay I am getting a breather to put on my right (passenger side) valve cover. My left (driver side) valve cover I am going to run a pcv valve. Right now my left pcv valve has a hose coming out a side port that runs to the center port on my EDL 1406 carb. It also has a hose coming off the the top of the pcv valve that runs to the charcoal canister. My question is do I have to run that hose from the pcv valve to the canister? Is it ok to just run a hose from the pcv valve to the center port on the carb? If so should I cap the ports on the canister or just leave them open. I am keeping the canister so I can run my gas tank vent hose to it. I know I can get rid of the canister and just vent my tank another way but the canister doesn't bother me, so I am just going to keep it. Here is what my left pcv valve looks like.
