The timing chain on my 307 sb broke today! What are the chances I hurt the valves????

Re: Question of the day? 307sb, timing chain and valves
Is it a stock motor or has the block been decked or heads milled or anything like that? If it is a stock type motor pretty good chance you didn't hurt the valves. If it a higher compression and parts have been modified for less clearance there is a possibility that you hurt them . I would at the very least do a leakdown test on the cylinders. But would be better off pulling the heads and actually looking at the valves and checking them out. Hth Dan.

I've never seen a stock SBC that damaged valves when the timing chain let loose.

You asked for chances I'd say slim at best none at least. Time it up put a chain on it and fire it off for a 'nother couple hundred thou. Jim

Re: Question of the day? 307sb, timing chain and valves
I had a customers 307 that bent the valves one time. Ive had plenty that didnt. If it wiped out all the teeth on the plastic spocket you need to drop the pan & clean it out. I have seen them plug up the oil intake & ruin the engine.
