interior paint question
 

i realize the interior paint matches body color. is this true 100% of the time?
i would like a 505 green exterior and white interior/roof combination but want to stay close to OEM.
were there any fleet trucks or "special" paint options available like this in 1972?
ive been searching but keep running into dead ends...........

I believe you could special order oddball paint combos, but not "custom" ones - ie the interior paint color was going to be the same color as the main body color no matter what. GM wouldnt go back and do a custom interior repaint after doing the main body color. A white interior with a non-white main body color would not have been available oem. Keep in mind, we're just talkin paint here, not oddball trim color combos with various paints. The sky was the limit for special orders there. GM would gladly give you a red vinyl interior on a green truck if you special ordered it.

On a 72 the interior will match the body color except the upper dash which is a flatted color matching the interior trim color or black depending on option content.
If you paint the interior white with a dark green exterior it will just look like a cheap color change even more so with a white roof too.

While special paint trucks do exist and that would of course be plausable explaination for such a combination you probably won't like it the end.

Well yes... and it illustrates why it would not be hard or impossible to have a different color sheetmetal, just expensive. Plus it is far more likely on twenty trucks than just one.

But to answer your question.
67 trucks came with the interior metal painted fawn (tan/gold if you will) as a base color with black vinyl. In fact panel trucks only came that way through the end of production.

When you ordered a trim upgrade the metal was painted a color to complement the trim color instead of the fawn.

So for example a dark green base truck would have a fawn interior with black vinyl. But that same dark green paint with a Custom trim package now received a matching mint green interior paint and green vinyl trim.

A silver or white truck would have red metal to match a red Custom interior.

Even a blue truck would have a different shade but still blue metal with a Custom blue interior.

Yeah,'67 is the only year you can get away with original,but a nice mild-custom with a touch of OEM could look great. There were different base colors used on '67s to compliment limited interior trim color choices.

and im fairly sure there were no '71 - '72s with a color between the body moldings. i have seen pics of a few but they seem to be "customized" trucks.

i'm just looking for a reasonable way of tying in some exterior color to green interior pieces (door panels, seats, dash pad, etc)

There are of course ways to add in color under the guise of being plausable special paint. The GMC red tone on tone is similar to the upcoming 73 special two tone pattern pattern would be one way of adding a green center band to a white truck. Or in the case of this known special paint truck which is a reverse of the 69-70 pickup special two-tone. It has a white body (and interior metal) with ochre accents on the roof and below the lower molding. This would look very nice in a white and dark green combo though rather commercial in nature just begging for lettering on the doors and even the bed sides.

i like the ochre and white. i think green would be even better. i'm leaning towards a commercial look anyway. i guess its a C30 thing, LOL.

do you have another pic of that truck?

interesting......i saw a bunch of different trucks when i went on a hunt in Saskatchewan. but that was 10-12 years ago. i never saw one like this though.

i have tried to search kijiji (i live on the Ont. border) but its difficult. very localized.
