Ram assisted steering question
I have a 67 c10 with the ram assisted steering and i was wondering if anyone has converted theirs to integral powersteering and what all it entailed. I know i'll need a steering box and maybe a center link but just checking to see if anyone else has done this and what all was needed. Any help would be appreciated thanks in advance.

Re: Ram assisted steering question
The frame on a 67 isn't dimpled for the PS gearbox. You can use one up to IIRC 86 but may have issues with the hose fittings since they changed in about 78.The dimple procedure is pretty simple and the arts are more easily available.I believe the center link is the same but not sure. There have been a few write up son this.If you do a search you'll find lots of info.Keep in mind that when you get the PS get ALL of it.Pulleys and brackets can be a nightmare if they aren't a matched set. Also PS brackets are engine specific, meaning you'll need bb fo a BB and 250 is diff from 292.

Re: Ram assisted steering question
Is the dimple for clearance or for mounting the gearbox?

Here's a link to a thread on this. The dimple is for mounting the gearbox. It has a slight protrusion that does not let it mount against the frame without the dimple. They also make a spacer to set it out from the frame though some report problems.I believe this is because they don't adjust to "center" the gearbox but haven't done one myself. Gearboxes for the 68-72 trucks are 4 1/2 turns lock to lock.Later 73 up are 3 1/2 turns.I prefer the later box since it has a stiffer feel to it.The 68-72 boxes feel somewhat "mushy" to me.You can use either but will need to use the pitman arm for the year of suspension. |
