Should I buy this truck?
67 3/4 Camper Special.
Truly rust free. I could not find a spec of rust on it anywhere. That one pic of some slight surface rust near the rear of the front left fender is about it. It now has a different (supposedly rebuilt) 69 Impala 327 and a Turbo 400 with a leaky pan gasket. The original motor and trans are in the back of the bed. It fired right up, and ran strong with good oil pressure. Temp gauge and Sun tach aren't working. Truck needs some front end work, and alignment, and definitely brake work. What's the verdict? It's 10-14 miles from my house. I have until 5:00 p.m. tomorrow before he relists it on ebay. I was the high bidder without meeting his reserve ($1825). "Buy it Now" price was lowered during the auction to $2500 and he says that's firm. Can someone ID the rear axle for me BTW? |
As far as the rear end I was told that it is an Eaton/corp rear. I have one under my 68 3/4 with 4:10 open gears. Great rear in my experience and from what I have heard from others.
If the engine and tranny are strong and there is no rust, it may be worth the cash. If there are no other dents than what is in the pics than I would go for it. People pay that and dont get all the options like this truck offers. |
Hmmmmm, Can we say road trip...LOL I have one in simmeler condition... (only very minor rust) 350, T-350 auto, 72 Disk brakes, 72 power brakes, 3.54 possy Dana 60, power steering, 3/4 ton rallys with 75% tread left... All for $3000.00... Nice truck... (Drive it home) What do you think...WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

Something dosen't look right with that glove box sticker....
Has custom group listed twice. No spin was an option by itself.. I never saw one with the optional 457 gears listed in the same listing. |
|
I noticed those option observations too...notice the 2 custom options numbers do not match.
The sticker DOES apear to be origianl...and they DO make errors on the assembly line. My frame VIN and body VIN differ by one number...the very last number. It is definatly a clean SOB...even in Tx I never saw one THAT clean underneath. |
ginter that sounds good to me, just think of all the money and headache you'll save with no rust, man give me a rust free unit any day, and he's giving you the original drive train, I'd go for it. and I'm kind of parchel to wes truck just cause I love those 67's, and better yet I like the white, wes's looks like a nice project truck too!
|
Yeah, the sticker issues don't bother me much. I'm looking at it from a price/value standpoint pretty much. The rust free part is mainly what I'm after. I don't really want a 3/4 ton though. Especially one with 4.56 gears in the rear. I need to do light hauling and some occasionally heavy towing (6000-6500 lbs once in a blue moon), but I also need to do it on the highway at 65-70 MPH. The thought was I could buy this truck and drive it while I work the black 72 Cheyenne next year.
This truck needs at least $500 to make it road worthy and reliable just the way it is right now (tires, gauges working, tranny leaks fixed, brakes, steering stuff, alignment, etc...). I think I'll offer $2k even (pretty sure he won't take it) and leave it at that. Thanks for the replies. |
Looks like a nice solid truck
You buy that and I'll take this off his hands :burnout: http://members.rennlist.com/gman/che...y/MVC-287F.JPG |
In 67 the custom convenience and appearance group was 2 separate option codes, that were combined into one in 68. So the Z62 and Z61 options are indeed factory correct.
As for the no-spin with the gear ratio, my son has a 68 burb that lists "positraction 4:11" on the same line as well, so I'd not be bothered by that anomoly either. |
Looks like a real good truck for the money. I would still play hardball with the seller and see if you can get it for less than the $2500, since it didn't sell the first time for his asking, what makes him think it will sell a second time on ebay?
|
So, I have a 68 C20 CST with a "No Spin Axle" listed on the options sheet, but there is no gear ratio listed. What gear ratio do I probably have?
|
4:11
|
The seller just called and made me an offer I don't *think* I can refuse. I still don't really want a 3/4 ton truck with 4.56 gears. But it is a posi, T400, AC cab, and RUST FREE!
Damn it. I really don't need another truck around here either. But it's RUST FREE! |

Thought I'd toss a pic in here (one of the major advantages to a web based BBS forum IMHO).

Dude...get the truck.

I'm going over again tomorrow morning to check ball joints and some other little odds and ends before this guy takes off to go camping at 8:00 a.m. I'll have a cash deposit in hand then and his wife will be around in the evening to hand over the keys/title if the deal goes through.
Who knows? He may drop another $100 without my even having to ask. |
