Anyone out there NOT happy with their Magnaflow exhaust???
 

Thinking of buying the 67-72 "cat back" system from Classic Industries, p/n= 16643 (copy & paste the URL below) looks like a pretty good deal with the discount. Anyway, anyone not happy with the sound or performance? I'm running a moderately built 350.

Any first hand experience with this system?

I can't speak for that particular system, but I have owned 2 Magnaflow systems in the past. They tend to be a mild sound, and not all that loud, which is what I prefer.

Quality and performance were fine, but those were both late model vehicles also.

It was cheaper for me to go down and just have them make the system instead of buying it. I love magnaflow. I like the rumble of flowmasters better but hate driving with them all the time and on the freeway it was to much.

I bought my magnaflow glass packs then went to a local shop to have them make my exhaust. Has a deep growl but not annoyingly loud. I like them.

I have a Magnaflow exhaust on my newer truck and love it. Nice rumble without the drone that the flowmasters seem to have. However if you want a loud exhaust it probably is not for you.

Guys, I am an ametuer compared to most of you'all and I'm curious why we would put a cat back system on these vehicles? I didnt think they were used till after 73. Is there a requirment in some states to retrofit or is there some advantage?

Cat Back is a modern term that doesn't really apply to our trucks. If you go to Magnaflow's website it basically says "crossmember back". So this system is mufflers and tailpipes.

ah--got it. Thanks much. I have dual Flowmasters w no crossmember. I'm old as dirt and just never get tired of that growl. Makes me feel young!

Just to add... "cat back" literally means from catalytic converter (cat) back (hence the modern term). But, obviously, these trucks never came with those. So you'll still be a little short on pipes to connect to your rams horns or headers with this kit.

I have had this kit sitting in the box for the last year. I won a $500 certificate from MF at the CPP truck cruise, so it cost me about $50 out of pocket. I know their systems are very well done but this system I think is setup for connecting to headers, not stock manifolds.

Still a long ways from installing so no idea on fitment.

I have a MF catback on my 06 Trailblazer and I have MF mufflers with an x-pipe on my 67 big block, love them both great sound.

Interesting, you asked if anyone is unhappy with their Magnaflows, and so far everyone loves them! :lol:

Including me. I bought a pair of MFs from a board member and like the sound much better than the burned-out glasspacks they replaced. I never have cared for the hollow echo-chamber sound of Flowmasters.

I'm fairly certain the kit comes out of the box for a lwb. (same kit, and you have to cut to fit a swb) So I guess to answer your question you can stop it wherever. The last piece of tailpipe is designed to run out at a 45 degree angle too (I think? .. mine is not all the way on just yet) but I may change some things on it.

Personally if I had it to do over again I would run Magnaflow 'can' type mufflers on it and get a shop to run your pipes. Stainless is cool and all but it will chew up a hacksaw / sawzall blade in a minute. I did this same setup on my GMC (MF Cans) and ran the pipes over outside the rail, then into the little pocket between the bed and the cab (wouldn't work for a step obviously) .. but here's a picture of it.

This way would be much cheaper than the whole MF kit too. I think it's like $600 bucks for the prebent kit. $200 for the mufflers + $250 for the muffler guy is not that much difference.. but at least you can have then run like you want them. The pre-bent kit IMO is not a good choice for a lowered / bagged truck. Too much stuff in the way. Stock height ? I'd do the kit.

You have to consider tho that the MF kit has all been mandrel bent.I have read that it makes a pretty significant difference in flow.

Good point.. but on a stock engine I just didn't worry too much about it.

I will probably take the one on my 68 off and rework it (tuck it under the truck more, thru the cross member etc.). Mandrel bends are cool but I have had to rebend here and there for my specific needs

iv never been a fan of magnaflow, iv always used flowmaster or cherry bomb
cherry bomb is best with the smaller engines like l6 and smaller for best sound
flowmaster sounds good on preety much anything


another big thing iv noticed about exhaust which i think iv mastered.

the placment of the muffler is critical on how close it is to the engine.
the amount of bends it the tubing has alot to do with flow.
iv made exhuast from 1 1/2"- 6" and have managed to make them sound different every time.
even with the same muffler you can change the power band in acceleration

call me crazy but iv had plenty of time to mess with different setups on the same vehicle and others

having a small bend can make all the difference in the sound you are trying to achieve
it sounds to simple but iv invested alot of time into this

Nice thread, I too like Magna Flows, not as drony as FMs while cruising down the road. Mandrel bent will flow better but on a stock to street/strip motor you will not notice or feel the difference in seat of the pants meter. All kits tout mandrel bent because that's one of the catch phrases in the performance industry, in reality they mandrel bend because that's the manufacturing process to turn out the kits for the least production cost. I got my system at my local shop, aluminized, 18 inch Magna Flows, plenty of really nice hangers, all tucked up inside the frame rails, very, very good job, $450. No cross over pipe because I did not want anything below the frame.

I bought this system complete. Looks fantastic - on the floor. It does not fit worth anything. The two sides do not match, the muffler locations do not match, the passenger side is bent incorrectly - it is turned so there is insufficient room for the bend over the axle. Buy the Flowmaster or have it done locally. BTW I have Magnaflow on my SSR and have been happy with it.

I asked the salesman many times specifically if the kit will bolt right on my stock 67 Short Bed V8 exhaust manifolds because for a price of 625.00 for the kit and installing it myself was a no brainer. As it turns out the kit does not go all the way to the stock exhaust manifolds, but for an additional two hundred forty five bucks I got the extensions, and now although they go up to my stock exhaust manifolds they don't extend back long enough to hook up to the original kit. The man who I sought to install a new exhaust system for me in the first place, is now going to make me the extra extensions. Should have just stuck with him, he would have been cheaper and still good quality.
