power steering for 1967 swb c10

Hello;

I just bought a 1967 Chevy swb c10. It's a good solid project truck. However, the power steering is waaaay too easy.....how can I "slow" it down...do I need to change the steering box? If so, what works?

Thanks...:flagw:

Does it have the oem 67 hydro assist or a later set up with modern power steering box? My guessis its the 67 unit that used assist rams attached to the steering rack. If ao the best bet is to swap it out for a more modern 68- mid 80's set up. Your frame will require some hammer work to mount up the ps box. You can do a search here in the site for more info.

Is it an original steering wheel? I know it sounds crazy but a smaller steering wheel will help.

Not sure about the steering box....but it looks like a modern style to me. It also has a small steering wheel already...I'm just starting to learn these trucks, so thanks for any and all suggestions!

This thread has some photos of the 1967 ram assist power steering. This is what came in 1967, 1968 started the "traditional" power steering.

I have a 67 and I put traditional power steering on mine, not the ram assist, so it's very possible that you have that style.

Thanks a lot for that link, the photos helped a lot! The lines run right into the steering box, and I do not see a slave cylinder. The bumper bracket has also been notched to clear the box, so I'm not sure what it is. It does have disc brakes, but 6 lug spindles, so I don't think there was a wholesale front end swap. I don't see any cuts or notches to the frame. Can I tell from a number on the box what it is, and if so where can I find it?

Thanks for your help...I've learned a lot already! :flagw:

Then it sounds like you have 1968 and up power steering, that's an extremely common swap.
There is a number on the box and that will tell you what the box was originally in.

Have you driven another 67-72 with power steering? It would be good to compare just to make sure you have a problem that you can fix.

Otherwise you may look into how much fluid you are moving. Is the power steering pump pulley standard size? I wonder if there isn't a bushing you can put into one of the hose fittings that would slow fluid down making your steering feel a little more normal???
