Stainless Window Trim - Yes or No
 

I'm trying to decide if I should kill the stainless trim or not. Ordered all the stuff to replace my windshield and keep the trim. Got the new trim today and it was twisted like a red vine.

I'm leaning towards killing it. The new stainless is so thin and cheap.

What do you think?

Well I think you truck looks so good will it even be missed if you decide not to use it. But my opinion is if it came with it put it back.

I'm the other hand, if a truck had body trim put on window trim, otherwise no trim, but maybe its because i have read so many heartache threads about bad installs?

I have both seals in hand ready to go. And i have a killer old school glass guy helping me. Think ill try with trim. If we cant get it set right. Ill kill it.

Don't give up on it. Your truck deserves that "quality" touch that the trim delivers. If you're not happy with the aftermarket, look for a nice set of OEM. But DON"T get rid of it.

I kept it on mine. I looked high and low for the best oem possible. The windshield trim is pretty nice but even the best of several sets of rear trim had flaws. It is easy enough to replace if i find better though.

Why did you order new trim ? is there something wrong with the old trim ? installing the trim can be a lot easier using some mild dish soap to lubricate it so it will side in correctly ,You can simply wash the excess away before installing the windshield into the truck , Don't use any lubricant when installing the gasket to glass as it will want to slide off the glass . make sure the windshield is centered perfectly before installing .

1) gasket to glass
2) stainless trim into gasket
3) assembled windshield and gasket/trim into truck :chevy:

Why not reuse the good old not thin and cheap original trim?

I say with trim. It is worth it to have on the truck. I did mine a few years ago and it was well worth it.

I'll give you a secret for the install that I learned. It worked great for me.

I build golf carts all the time for people and though I'm not a restorer I do have to do the trim on them.
Get a big Kerosene heater and get it going have a big metal pot that will sit on top of it and fill with water and the gasket. Just as the water starts boiling good take it off and let it cool to the point of handling it. Put the trim in place and the glass and u should have a nice install. ;):chevy:

I had such a hard time trying to find some that was qualified to install my windshield. I took over six weeks to get it in. I'm quite sure it was because I insisted on keeping my trim. It was well worth it in the long run.

X2... get your original polished up and reuse it, it will fit corectly. If there are scratches or dents, they can be fixed.

Whats sad is us old guys who grew up driving /building /restoring these old trucks are retiring (myself included ) and the young guys barely get to put their hands on a few to learn how it's done while many of us have worked on hundreds and driven or owned dozens . These old trucks are the muscle cars of today because they cost less to build and have a purpose other than Sunday driving . It's a lot easier to talk your girl into buying an old truck to have around the house than a muscle car to drive to the shows ( And still run the same drive trains !) , And a lot more fun too ! Keep the trim reuse the original ! It's easier to polish the old trim while it's still on the truck than taking it apart and possibly bending it !

Stick with trim but please take it from me - I tried two sets of repro trim - go with polished up OEM trim. Maybe you'll get lucky and stumble on a set that fits but I doubt it. I wasted a lot of $$ on three different installers and the trim. With OEM trim the job was done in under a half hour with no fitment issues. In my opinion, the repro SS trim is totally worthless.

Front repop trim stinks, it foes not fit well, rear trim in repop fits ok. The secret to the front is using 67-70 trim and gasket. It goes in much easier than the later stuff does.
