Finally met with a guy on painting the truck
 

So i finally found somebody close to talke to about painting my 87 pickup. Have another local guy i am going to meet with hopefully next week and a reference from here on the board in Tennessee.

The guy yesterday seemed like a good guy but thats really about all i have to go by. I plan on asking for some pictures of prior projects next time i go back. He was referred to me by a local body shop in town.

Gave me a price of $3500. This included removing all of the trim, front and rear bumpers, back windshield, door glass, all seals, door panels, removing the bed, spraying the base coat, a couple clear coats, wet sanding the whole truck and then another layer of clear after. He is also going to spray in my bed liner (Raptor). He gave me a book for color samples to take home and look at. Said it would be about a month before he could take it in and would probably take him about 2 months to finish. All in all, thought it was a pretty good price for the amount of work. He said the truck needed almost no body work and the only real issue is the driver side hinge that needs to be rebuilt i guess to get rid of some sag.

Plan is to go with Cyber Gray Metallic for the color. Also a 2.5/4 drop. On the fence right now on keeping the rally wheels or getting new rims as well. LOL.

When I painted my truck I stripped it myself, bumpers,trim,door seals,grill, lights etc, this way there are no surprises when you get the truck back ;)

I thought about that too. I may go that route and start removing everything that i can. I am going to check with him to see how that would change the price.

that price is kinda on the low side please make sure he is using quality materials and id like to see some of his work up close and personal... photos hide a zillion imperfections

besides, nobody can put your truck bck together as good as you can. speaking from experience

I will try to get a look at some of his work and go from there. I'm not looking for a show truck winning finish but I do want it to look really good. I want it to be money well used.

I agree strip it yourself. Then while its gone refurbish theparts you took off. Youd be surprised at the amount of trim you think is.ok but when you get new paint you dont want old trim.

The price sounds low, especially for the stripping of truck and the bedliner included.

My truck should be almost done. I stripped it all myself, and paid him $4500 just to do bodywork and paint. No bedliner or inside bed paint. He is also doing the grill and door jambs.

You cqn freshen up things like the drip rails, polish them, paint the rail frame gloss black, get stainless screws, polish all mirrors and grill trim, etc.

I spent another $1k in replacement parts. Door handles, window rubber, door rubber, window felt kit, chrome trim, wheelwell trim, emblems, front bumper, etc.

I will say though that I have seen some pretty good pictures in here of paint jobs in the 3500 buck range and they looked really good. When you are your own shop and the only one working, 3500 is a pretty good chunk of change.

Could be. Lets say materials (sandpaper, filler, primer, guide coat, base and clear, tape, masking paper) could cost $1,000?? Thats not counting the bedliner materials. Another 100? 200? Idk. So hes pulling in $2300-2500 for all that work...pulling everything off truck, fixing all dinga and dents and using a guide coat of he does it right, block sanding, painting, sanding, clear, buff, then masking off everything and prepping bed and doing bedliner...then putting it all back together. I dont know. Just sounds like a.ton of work but if hes willing to do it for that price go for it!

Yep. I am providing the bed liner kit too se he doesn't have to provide that. Any feedback on what type (brand) of paints are considered good and which are considered bad and need to be avoided?

I would say that 2500 in a month that will more than likely be tax free is a pretty good pay day. All relative too I guess considering where you live and cost of living. The price did surprise me but I am also not going to pay 5k to paint this truck. That just doesn't make good sense for me. Lol.

I paid 3500 for mine... look at the paint wrong it chips.
Seems soft at the same time...
And I disassembled my truck.
Hindsight says pay more.
